Rebecca was thinking about a classic pattern structure of crisscrossing motifs, too. This pattern is organic but structured, a nod to traditional. Rebecca wanted to design something soft and textural as if she had just slowly moved her brush up and down in small repetitive marks along a wall or across a piece of fabric—which is in fact how she painted this pattern but on a piece of paper. The soft texture created by a brush with only a bit of paint left on it creates a cozy soothing feeling, almost like white noise. Use this pattern like you would a grasscloth or texture. It’s soft and easy to mix with other patterns.

Use this fabric indoors or out. A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling. Alder repeats an abstract dripping pattern that reminded Rebecca of the catkins of an alder tree. The single-color print allows the linen ground (ivory or oatmeal, depending on the color) to show through, adding to its textured appearance—almost like a pair of Japanese selvedge jeans. At the beginning of spring, Rebecca walked to the Brooklyn Bridge Park and laid on a blanket, thrilled that warmer weather and greenery were starting to return to New York. She was looking through the grass and found a four-leaf clover, and then more! It served as a reminder to look for the good: the silver linings, the happy moments. There are times where you need happy, playful reminders in your home. Rebecca referenced Josef Frank, an iconic designer, and his clover pattern.

Thickets of berry bushes inspired the name for this indoor upholstery-weight fabric. Woven from a soft, nubby cotton-wool blend, each color contains all the pigments Rebecca would use if she were mixing it with her paints. Dusky browns, navies, and greens lay the foundation for FOREST PURPLE. From a distance, it’s almost a very neutral dark gray that shifts moody and romantic, like the shadows trees cast at night; up close, it’s a dark plum. This fabric is available as a pillow here .

Rebecca enjoys working with cut paper. The physicality of creating a shape out of a piece of paper, the way it makes the lines crisper, and the irreversibility of it are some of her favorite aspects of this method. There’s a bit you can’t control as you get going. She had the idea to create a leafy fern design by cutting long leaves out of the marbled papers. The softness of the marble against the graphic cut-out leaves creates a pattern within a pattern, a world within a world. With the large repeat, this design has a lot of movement and life.
