This pattern began as a large painting. Rebecca experimented with a resist technique and dotted each larger circle with smaller marks. The resulting motifs referenced radial patterns found in the natural world, from flowers to sand dollars, as well as the passage of time. With several individual colors to match within it, this multi-colored design works well as the start of a scheme or as a bridge to tie colors in your existing scheme together. A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling. This pattern was inspired by a picture Rebecca snapped of long grass while visiting Portland, Oregon. Travel heightens awareness of your surroundings and invites discovery. Rebecca remembers these long grasses leaning against one another, layering to create a rich texture. She started making a large painting and watched how the shapes connected and overlapped, and how the color could intertwine to create an atmosphere. Throughout the years, Rebecca has explored long curved shapes in various ways and frequently doodled them in the corners of her notebooks. When she began playing with this linear shape for a woven, she explored how it could capture how a breeze ripples through the spring air. She creates a pattern with movement by repeating this simple mark in varying darkness. Some marks sink back into the ground of the cloth, whereas others pop against the background. We love the contrast in this concept: the result is graphic but evokes the idea of something we can’t see.

We used our non-woven fibre paper, but it almost has the feeling of grasscloth because it reads texturally.
