Rebecca Atwood Designs Small Daisy Fabric in Inkwash/Oatmeal

Bursts of nature always bring happiness. Small daisies seem to be very resilient flowers that thrive in surprising places. Rebecca often notices them popping out of a crack in the sidewalk or a field by the side of the road. They’re common and unassuming, but cheery. We loved the idea of something small scale that would read texturally from across a room, but offer the same unexpected joy of spotting daisies when viewed up close. Use this pattern somewhere you need a spot of joy.

Rebecca painted the original artwork while working on a series of ideas for florals and drew inspiration for this iteration from the pop of color wildflowers bring to a grassy field and the charm of city flowers that manage to bloom through a crack in the concrete.

Here the pattern is reduced to a small scale and creates an easy texture for layering other patterns, colors, and textures against. Rebecca pushed her brush onto the paper repetitively in different colors to create this field of blooms. After creating the original artwork, she enlarged the scale to add playfulness. For a more abstract layout, use this pattern on smaller pieces, like a pillow, or embrace the garden experience and use it on patio furniture or a kitchen banquette. Use this fabric indoors or out. A small vintage fabric cutting Rebecca found in Tokyo, Japan inspired this fabric. It was a small-scale print that read geometric but also like a floral. She loved this idea for a textural woven and redrew the motif, adding the softness of her hand and increasing the size so that it would translate well as a woven. She thought a lot about landscape textures and how we need these textures in our homes to create the environment that feels best to us. Use this fabric to cover a sofa in a field of flowers, but viewed at a distance for a soft and easy vibe.

This woven quality reminds Rebecca of needlepoint. Her great-aunt Libby was an avid needle-pointer and growing up, she had needlepoint seat cushions at her dining table, and little framed pieces hanging on the wall. Rebecca wanted to explore something graphic because the weave is so textural. She looked to small, geometric, vintage patterns – like the ones you’d find on the inside of a book cover. This crisp midweight upholstery fabric can create a range of moods depending on the color you choose—from cool ones that give a space a light, breezy feeling to grounded ones that bring warmth. Designed to coordinate with our Bubbles mural to continue the pattern onto a ceiling, this subtle print looks equally lovely on its own. It calls to mind fading seafoam or falling grains of sand, but without the larger mural for context it can also read as floating specks of dust, snow flurries, or tiny drops of beaded rain, all softly illuminated and suspended in motion.
