A synthetic bright, cool blue with high opacity and lightfastness. Cerulean paints with a very consistent smooth texture. Discovered by Swiss chemist Albrecht Hopfner in 1789 and introduced to a wider market in the UK by art materials manufacturer George Rowney in the 1860s, it became an important addition to synthetic blues of the time like Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine and is still coveted for its opacity and use in painting skies. Berthe Morisot used the color in her 1879 painting Summer’s Day.

This lush, opaque color is beautifully rich and smooth. The pigment comes from parasitic Cochineal insects, which are harvested from prickly pear cacti and ground to produce a brilliant, deep red dye. The dye is then transformed from a water-soluble powder into an insoluble Lake pigment, by adding a base like clay or alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). It’s a fascinating process that allows us to make natural paint from not only standard earth and mineral substances, but plants and insects as well!

Our ultimate blended brown! Cocoa is a careful mix of 6 (!!) of our core collection colors—the most out of all our blends, with Lime and Ruby in close second. Compared to Burnt Umber Dark and Reddish—both beautiful, single origin earth pigments that lend texture and transparency—Cocoa is a smooth, opaque alternative with a lovely ultra-matte finish. We all need a little more pink in our lives! This happy, bubblegum pink will give any painting that fresh, rosy-cheeks-after-a-brisk-walk-on-Ocean-Beach vibe. This color contains fluorescent pigment, which is not lightfast. Fading can be reduced by coating finished pieces in a UV protective varnish and/or keeping them out of direct sunlight.

This is perhaps the richest ochre we've made yet, with the most consistent and smooth texture. It's a highly opaque and lightfast deep gold that sits extremely matte, but can be watered down to subtle yellows or tinted to an opaque pastel. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.
