Wow-o-wow, we adore this vibrant, fun color so much at the shop! In our often foggy Sunset neighborhood, it’s an instant lift to spot a house bedecked with stunning pink and purple fuchsia plants. The deep, bright tones in this blend lend that same subtle dimension and richness of color we love to see on a gray day, right here in our palettes! This color contains fluorescent pigment, which is not lightfast. Fading can be reduced by coating finished pieces in a UV protective varnish and/or keeping them out of direct sunlight.

True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of use around the world, from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts, to illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. Vermillion was even used as a cosmetic rouge in ancient West Asia.

A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.

This series of paintings was created to celebrate the female purveyors behind the San Francisco restaurant, Flour + Water's, special Women's Month tasting menu. Size 9" x 12" 11 people from our team worked together to collectively create these watercolor paintings, one color mark at a time. Our team is inspired by curiosity, craft and experimentation and we made this series of works in celebration of the visionary women behind each of these beautiful ingredients. Their curious, playful natures are fascinating, and their graceful movements are full of joy. Observing them swimming in the San Francisco Bay inspired me to loosen my approach to painting and respond more intuitively to the natural world. In this workshop we’ll explore foundational watercolor techniques such as wet-into-wet, layering, and more, with an emphasis on using minimal, fluid brushstrokes to paint these streamlined creatures.

Thursday, July 30, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Dorothy Hood was born in 1918 and spent her life in both Mexico and Texas. Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.
