Case for Making Rouge Vermilion

A deep reddish-pink Vermilion pigment formulated synthetically to simulate the characteristics of the mineral pigment Vermilion and eliminate the use of mercury. This rich color has very high opacity and a smooth texture. True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of being used throughout history and around the world from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts and the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. It was even used as a rouge-like cosmetic in ancient West Asia.

The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness. All three of our Blue Ridge colors are natural iron-oxide pigments - clay deposits that over time have been saturated in limonite, which produces a yellow hue, and hematite, which produces a reddish hue.

Like all of our lake pigment paints, French Rose Lake is made with a mineral pigment that is fixed to a natural calcium carbonate base—which gives it a soft, velvety, matte finish when dry. This deep rosy color is lightfast, semi-opaque and very smooth. All of our watercolors are non-toxic and handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments and natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine and distilled water. Half Pans contain around 2ml of paint and are approximately 3/4" x 1/2" x 3/8" deep.

Thursday, July 30, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Dorothy Hood was born in 1918 and spent her life in both Mexico and Texas. Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.
