This coffee comes to us via Mountain Harvest, a company working to improve the quality of Ugandan coffee while making coffee communities more sustainable. We’ve been partners since 2018, their first season of production, noting and encouraging improvements over time. For the second year in a row, we are thrilled to offer Makali as a subscriber-exclusive product. Forty-five women in the Makali community produced this coffee. Women in eastern Africa do much of the work to produce coffee, but are not often encouraged to participate in its trade.

El Batan is a small coffee-farming community nestled in the highlands of Loja, Ecuador. This year, four farms from the area approached Roberto Jiménez, our export partner in Ecuador, seeking his help to connect with a buyer for their coffee. When Roberto shared a sample with us, we were immediately impressed by the quality and knew it would be a perfect fit for our Single Origin Subscription program. Each grower carefully harvested and pulped uniformly ripe red coffee cherries, then fermented the coffee for 48 hours––about a day longer than is typical––to enhance fruit flavors in the cup.

In 2012, Catholic Relief Services launched the Borderlands project to connect coffee growers in Nariño with the specialty market, offering farmers who had been divided by regional conflict a new path to prosperity through collaboration. Agrocafe El Tambo is one of the farmer associations that emerged from this effort. They chose to brand their coffee as Nuevo Amanecer, Spanish for “New Dawn,” as a nod to the paradigm shift. Each year, we reserve the highest-scoring coffees from the participating associations exclusively for our 2-bag Single Origin subscribers.

The Andes Mountains split into three ranges in Nariño, Colombia, creating a stunning landscape at ideal altitudes for coffee production. In the Kirundi language, Kazoza N’Ikawa translates to “the future is coffee”—a name hinting at the commitment to quality exemplified by its members. The coffees we source from the Colasay region have quickly become some of our favorites in all of Peru. Yonal Fernandez is part of a small group of producers in Colasay whose coffee we began purchasing in late 2019. His coffee has been featured in Fast Forward and La Viuda, but this is the first time we’re showcasing it as a unique microlot. Together with his wife, Imelda, Yonal cultivates the unique Bourbon de Colasay variety–a regional mutation that performs equally well in the field and in the cup.
