Eudis Orosco named his farm Finca Villa Vista—an apt name for a farm that sits at a staggering 2,117 meter altitude with stunning views of snow-capped mountains and lush plant life. Eudis originally learned farm management from his father and refined his practices over the years with help from his cooperative, Incahuasi. From a section of his farm dedicated to the cultivation of the Gesha variety, this is an exquisite example of how amazing geography, coffee variety, and quality control produce a first-rate coffee with notes of blackberry, floral, and tropical fruit.

The rugged and remote Incahuasi Valley is home to some of the most unique coffees we buy in South America. When we first started exploring this area with the help of our importing partner, Red Fox Coffee Merchants, we tasted samples from a few farms that stood out for their stunning complexity. We later learned this was the result of a unique coffee variety that producers referred to simply as "Inca gesha." There was certainly a resemblance to other geshas we've tried, both in the plant's appearance and in the cup, but there were also some differences.

Growers in the Orgánica cooperative have focused on achieving the highest quality in every aspect of their production, including planting higher-quality, harder-to-grow varieties. This lot features their Pink Bourbon and Gesha selections. While the cup may not present the overt florals often associated with these varieties’ Ethiopian lineage, it offers a compelling expression of Colombia’s evolving coffee culture. Located on the outskirts of Amaybamba—a small village deep within the Incahuasi Valley—is Lucio Luque’s young coffee parcel, Nuevo Progresso. This portion of his farm is unique in that it was planted with a single variety, which although was initially thought to be SL-09 was later discovered to be Gesha. His excitement and intentional planting of this variety piqued our attention, and we worked with the cooperative and our supply chain partners to isolate Lucio’s coffee from the larger blend it would have otherwise been destined for.

Hugo Ruiz’s small farm overlooks the highlands of western Guatemala near the town of Concepción Huista. Hugo is a part of the CODECH cooperative, an organization we’ve worked with closely since 2010. Each season, the cooperative tastes each farmer's delivery, setting aside the highest-scoring lots to be sold at a premium, incentivizing and rewarding quality. Hugo’s coffee is regularly one of the top-scoring coffees each season. After hundreds of cups tasted, the coop identified this coffee as one of the best of the harvest, and our sourcing team couldn’t agree more.

The village of Mpemba, a tiny and tranquil hamlet tucked into the rolling hills of Burundi’s Kayanza province, is home to the Kazoza N’Ikawa cooperative. In the Kirundi language, Kazoza N’Ikawa translates to “the future is coffee”—a name hinting at the commitment to quality exemplified by its members. The coffees we buy from the co-op are not only our favorites from Burundi but across the entire region. This washed lot exhibits all of the hallmarks that make Burundian coffees so unique.
