This pigment comes from the southern Italian Alps, which is a rich source of very old earth pigments preserved by overlapping volcanic rock. Case for Making Blue Ridge Red Hematite
A deep, warm brick red sienna earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness. All three of our Blue Ridge colors are natural iron-oxide pigments - clay deposits that over time have been saturated in limonite, which produces a yellow hue, and hematite, which produces a reddish hue.

Case for Making French Vermilion
A bright orange-red vermilion pigment formulated synthetically to simulate the characteristics of the mineral pigment Vermilion and eliminate the use of mercury. This rich color has high opacity, good lightfastness and a smooth texture. True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of being used throughout history and around the world from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts and the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. It was even used as a rouge-like cosmetic in ancient West Asia.

Case for Making Blue Ridge Violet Hematite
A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.

Case for Making Genuine Indigo
This rich blue is in a category all its own—its depth and range exceeds any other color we can think of! Compared with Synthetic Indigo , our Genuine Indigo is a bit more textured and deeper in tone. Both are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Genuine Indigo is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant through a fermentation process, and further refined to achieve greater saturation and intensity.

Case for Making Carmine Naccarat
This lush, opaque color is beautifully rich and smooth. The pigment comes from parasitic Cochineal insects, which are harvested from prickly pear cacti and ground to produce a brilliant, deep red dye. The dye is then transformed from a water-soluble powder into an insoluble Lake pigment, by adding a base like clay or alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). It’s a fascinating process that allows us to make natural paint from not only standard earth and mineral substances, but plants and insects as well!

Case for Making Color Conversations with Alexis Joseph
TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 6:30pm - 8:30pm PT This is an in-person workshop at CfM Art Room: 4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop! Ever stood in front of a painting wishing you had your paints with you? This workshop was born from exactly that feeling. Case for Making CfM Oxalis
CfM Oxalis captures the cheery yellow of the California wildflower also known as Woodsorrel, which Bay Area locals might remember from childhood as Sourgrass. Here in San Francisco, Oxalis seems to pop up from every available patch of soil in mid-February, and we wanted to celebrate this annual harbinger of spring! Oxalis flowers make a wonderful, potent natural yellow dye, and CfM Oxalis was inspired by the flower and the slightly more orange dye bath.

Saturday, July 18, 11:00am - 12:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Mother Nature continues to be one of our best muses! Butterflies have been a popular motif historically in art and design, perhaps for their fleeting beauty and fragility, and watercolour is the perfect medium to explore their iridescent wings. In this session we’ll be studying butterflies & moths and observing their wide range of patterns and textures - their symmetry allows for repetition and practicing techniques.
