Comprised of 431 square kilometers of protected forest, Yacuri National Park straddles the border of southern Ecuador’s Loja and Zamora-Chinchipe provinces. For generations, farmers in the periphery of the park have managed organic agroforestry systems, protecting the land for future generations and preserving the area's stunning biodiversity. In 2023, Caravela Coffee—one of our export partners— helped a group of these growers obtain organic certification, to reward their sustainable practices with organic premiums.

On land shaped by both profound loss and the deep dedication of the Rwandan coffee professionals who steward it, the Ruronzi coffee farm represents a new chapter in the country’s coffee story. Owned and managed by our exporting partner, Ikawa House, this natural sundried lot comes from their second-ever harvest and is one of the best naturals we’ve tasted from Rwanda. Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Lucio Luque

In a small village deep within the Incahuasi Valley, Lucio Luque cultivates a vibrant coffee parcel, Nuevo Progresso. This section of his farm stands out for its exclusive planting of a unique variety that has redefined the region's potential for quality. Lucio's enthusiasm for this variety caught our attention, prompting us to collaborate with the cooperative and our supply chain partners to separate this coffee from the larger blend it was originally destined for. The outcome is a coffee that captivates with fruity notes of blood orange and bubble gum underpinned by delicate florals.

Through many changes in this region since those early days, producers’ dedication to quality and environmental stewardship has remained steady. Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Mountain Harvest Peaberry

This coffee comes to us via Mountain Harvest, a company working to improve the quality of Ugandan coffee while making the communities that grow it more sustainable. This coffee is a special peaberry selection from farms on Mount Elgon. Peaberries occur when one seed develops inside a coffee fruit instead of two. Sorting them out is extra work, but it’s worth it for their dynamic and sweet flavors. We taste apricot, black tea, and coconut.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Finca Aurora – Anaerobic Java

The Java variety has a long history, with its genetic origins traced to regional landraces in western Ethiopia. As a variety known for producing high quality, the team at Finca Aurora has experimented with anaerobic processing to further accentuate Java’s unique potential. When done well, coffees processed in this way often result in profiles that are more fruit-forward and vibrant than their traditionally-washed counterparts. This particular convergence of genetics and anaerobic processing produced one of the most unique coffees we've tasted from Nicaragua.

While the cup may not present the overt florals often associated with these varieties’ Ethiopian lineage, it offers a compelling expression of Colombia’s evolving coffee culture. La Palestina began as a small plot planted by Don Juan Alarcón in 1978. As his family grew, so did the size of the farm as he purchased additional land to pass on to his children. Over time, the Alarcóns have worked to create a farm that seamlessly weaves together tradition and innovation. Since our first visit to Palestina in 2018, we’ve seen a range of investments that have not only improved coffee quality but also increased biodiversity. This exclusive lot comes to us from the plot of Juan’s son, Jose Praxedes Alarcón.

Fundochamba is a small mountain community just outside of Quilanga in Ecuador’s Loja province. We purchase from a group of 14 growers in this area who have worked together to steadily improve quality and connect with the specialty market. This year, the group dedicated a small portion of their volume to a prolonged fermentation experiment. After pulping, this coffee was fermented in a cool, low-oxygen environment for about 72 hours. The resulting cup offers intricate fruit complexity and sweetness. We taste dark-fruit notes of concord grape and black cherry, swimming in a sweet, syrupy body.
