Thickets of berry bushes inspired the name for this indoor upholstery-weight fabric. Woven from a soft, nubby cotton-wool blend, each of the colors contains all the pigments Rebecca would use if she were mixing it with her paints. This fabric is intended for indoor use. For our first “solid” fabric, Rebecca wanted something that would be durable and a great basic, but that also made it easier to layer within a color palette—or even build one from. We rarely see flat colors in big swaths in nature. Our natural world is so complex. We see a field of grass, but it’s full of tonal variation and movement. Rebecca has been reflecting on the concepts of fields and hills. Looking out at the horizon, a landscape, or a panoramic view can be comforting. Round shapes are playful and evoke happiness, which is a feeling she always wants at home. She wanted to create something with round shapes, while also referencing the textures of grass, and the result was this pattern. It has movement to it and is airy and textural. Like most, this pattern began in Rebecca’s sketchbook. She was playing around with a new small brush and admiring the line quality. She started painting arched shapes that were reminiscent of clouds, which she then explored as a larger painting. We love that patterns can become the backdrop to our lives and help us create an environment. Inspired by the sky, this textural pattern will add atmosphere to a room. A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling.
