Over our 20+ year relationship, the organic coffees grown in the Yungas jungle of the country’s eastern mountains have consistently endured complicated logistical hurdles, making their quality all the more remarkable. This lot represents the best of these dedicated farmers, showcasing subtle cherry notes and a complex sweetness reminiscent of vanilla and hazelnut. Pronunciation: NWEH-vah…

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Lucio Luque
In a small village deep within the Incahuasi Valley, Lucio Luque cultivates a vibrant coffee parcel, Nuevo Progresso. This section of his farm stands out for its exclusive planting of a unique variety that has redefined the region's potential for quality. Lucio's enthusiasm for this variety caught our attention, prompting us to collaborate with the cooperative and our supply chain partners to separate this coffee from the larger blend it was originally destined for. The outcome is a coffee that captivates with fruity notes of blood orange and bubble gum underpinned by delicate florals.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Hugo Ruiz
Hugo Ruiz’s small farm overlooks the highlands of western Guatemala near the town of Concepción Huista. Hugo is a part of the CODECH cooperative, an organization we’ve worked with closely since 2010. Each season, the cooperative tastes each farmer's delivery, setting aside the highest-scoring lots to be sold at a premium, incentivizing and rewarding quality. Hugo’s coffee is regularly one of the top-scoring coffees each season. After hundreds of cups tasted, the coop identified this coffee as one of the best of the harvest, and our sourcing team couldn’t agree more.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail K’uychi
Since 2015, we’ve purchased coffee from producers nestled deep in the mountains of Nariño, Colombia. The area has a history of heavy guerrilla activity that, for decades, isolated the community and discouraged collective business efforts. Against all odds, the producers of K’uychi have worked together to improve their farms, conserve their community’s natural resources, and bring us this wonderful coffee. We taste notes of green grape, clementine, and milk chocolate. Pronunciation…

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail El Batan
El Batan is a small coffee-farming community nestled in the highlands of Loja, Ecuador. This year, four farms from the area approached Roberto Jiménez, our export partner in Ecuador, seeking his help to connect with a buyer for their coffee. When Roberto shared a sample with us, we were immediately impressed by the quality and knew it would be a perfect fit for our Single Origin Subscription program. Each grower carefully harvested and pulped uniformly ripe red coffee cherries, then fermented the coffee for 48 hours––about a day longer than is typical––to enhance fruit flavors in the cup.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Yonal Fernandez
The coffees we source from the Colasay region have quickly become some of our favorites in all of Peru. Yonal Fernandez is part of a small group of producers in Colasay whose coffee we began purchasing in late 2019. His coffee has been featured in Fast Forward and La Viuda, but this is the first time we’re showcasing it as a unique microlot. Together with his wife, Imelda, Yonal cultivates the unique Bourbon de Colasay variety–a regional mutation that performs equally well in the field and in the cup.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Damian Espinoza
We were introduced to Damian Espinoza during our first year working with Origin Coffee Lab, a specialty exporter in Peru. Since then, we’ve purchased his coffee every year and had the privilege of visiting his farm in Chirinos numerous times. During those visits, Damian has been quiet and reserved, but his coffee clearly speaks for itself. After placing highly in the Cup of Excellence, he has continued to explore new varieties and processing techniques in pursuit of quality.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Mountain Harvest Peaberry
This coffee comes to us via Mountain Harvest, a company working to improve the quality of Ugandan coffee while making the communities that grow it more sustainable. This coffee is a special peaberry selection from farms on Mount Elgon. Peaberries occur when one seed develops inside a coffee fruit instead of two. Sorting them out is extra work, but it’s worth it for their dynamic and sweet flavors. We taste apricot, black tea, and coconut.

Historically, coffee has not been grown here, but a new project is underway to change that. Farmers are planting coffee trees all across the district, creating an important source of income diversification. The early results are impressive, with excellent quality emerging from the region. La Golondrina Honey is a fresh take on a beloved classic—offering a new dimension to one of our most popular single-origin coffees. The result is as intriguing as it is delicious, adding complexity while preserving the balance that has made La Golondrina a favorite. Expect flavors of black cherry, lime, and caramel. Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Bijao
Huila is a rare origin for us—most of the Colombian coffees we buy come from long-term partners in the regions of Nariño and Cauca, but this year we began exploring Huila's slightly offset harvest cycle to source fresher coffee for our 100% Colombian product: Gradient. What started as a logistical curiosity led us to Bijao, a group of small producers near the community of La Plata whose name comes from a native plant traditionally used to wrap tamales.

This subscriber-exclusive lot comes to us from the Cenfrocafe cooperative, our longest-running partnership in Peru. El Buen Pastor is a small association of 10 producers tending small plots in the San Pedro community of Tabaconas. Though we’ve worked with Cenfrocafe since 2007, this is our first purchase from the Tabaconas region. It’s a fairly remote area, about four hours by car from the cooperative’s headquarters in Jaen. Over the years, we’ve tasted a few small lots from Tabaconas with notable quality.

Where other exporters saw impossibility, Mountain Harvest saw potential: farmers willing to take risks and invest in their future. With support from a Counter Culture Seeds grant, they built a community-run processing station that has given rise to one of the best coffees we’ve tasted in the country, Mabono Honey.
