Case for Making Blue Ridge Violet Hematite
A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.

Case for Making Pink Pipestone
Pink Pipestone is only currently available in our Natural Earth Palette and Core 36 Palette . *PLEASE NOTE* The harder minerals in this pigment make it grittier than our other colors! This uniquely textured, natural earth pigment is semi-transparent and lightfast. It's sourced from a muted, reddish-pink clay found mainly in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Canada, and the blushy pink color comes from iron oxide (hematite) that seeps into the clay beds over time!

Case for Making Synthetic Indigo
Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Both colors are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Genuine Indigo is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant through a fermentation process, and further refined to achieve greater saturation and intensity.

Case for Making Fluorescent Magenta
An ultra-bright synthetic! Like all our fluorescents, this fun glowy pink is opaque and super smooth. Fluorescents absorb invisible UV light energy and reemit it at a higher visible wavelength. This enhances the appearance of the pigment, delivering those eye-catching, radiant colors we love! Fluorescents are also fantastic for mixing a bit of brightness into core colors. Let the party begin! Important Notes on Fluorescents!: The amazing neon qualities of fluorescents are difficult to capture in a scan or photograph.

Case for Making Venetian Red
A deep and warm earth color, similar to a deep scarlet, Venetian Red is opaque and lightfast with a smooth and consistent texture. This pigment comes from the southern Italian Alps, which is a rich source of very old earth pigments preserved by overlapping volcanic rock. It consists almost completely of ferric oxide derived from hematite, a crystalline-structured mineral form of iron(lll) oxide. Venetian Red was a color widely used in Italian Renaissance painting beginning in the 14th century.

Case for Making Luberon Orange
The perfect earthy, ochre orange for those rich summer sunsets! We are so excited to add Luberon Orange to our earth pigment collection. Luberon orange originates from ocher deposits in the French quarries of Gargas and Rustrel nested in a 12 mile long enclave in the heart of the Luberon Mountains. This pigment has a smooth, rich, and opaque color payoff and is also lightfast.

Case for Making Carmine Naccarat
This lush, opaque color is beautifully rich and smooth. The pigment comes from parasitic Cochineal insects, which are harvested from prickly pear cacti and ground to produce a brilliant, deep red dye. The dye is then transformed from a water-soluble powder into an insoluble Lake pigment, by adding a base like clay or alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). It’s a fascinating process that allows us to make natural paint from not only standard earth and mineral substances, but plants and insects as well!

Case for Making Fluid Fauna: Butterflies and Moths with Claire Wilson
Saturday, July 18, 11:00am - 12:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Mother Nature continues to be one of our best muses! Butterflies have been a popular motif historically in art and design, perhaps for their fleeting beauty and fragility, and watercolour is the perfect medium to explore their iridescent wings. In this session we’ll be studying butterflies & moths and observing their wide range of patterns and textures - their symmetry allows for repetition and practicing techniques.

Case for Making CfM Oxalis
CfM Oxalis captures the cheery yellow of the California wildflower also known as Woodsorrel, which Bay Area locals might remember from childhood as Sourgrass. Here in San Francisco, Oxalis seems to pop up from every available patch of soil in mid-February, and we wanted to celebrate this annual harbinger of spring! Oxalis flowers make a wonderful, potent natural yellow dye, and CfM Oxalis was inspired by the flower and the slightly more orange dye bath.

Case for Making Color Conversations with Alexis Joseph
TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 6:30pm - 8:30pm PT This is an in-person workshop at CfM Art Room: 4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop! Ever stood in front of a painting wishing you had your paints with you? This workshop was born from exactly that feeling. We'll use projected abstract artworks as our reference and build a color map together -- a kind of paint-by-numbers where the "numbers" are your own personal notes about the colors you see.
