Case for Making Pink Pipestone

A natural earth pigment that is lightfast and transparent with a fair amount of texture. Slate green is a natural stone chalk that has been ground down into a fine powder which we've found to have a lovely grittiness to it. All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness! Half Pans contain around 2ml of paint and are approximately 3/4" x 1/2" x 3/8" deep.

A deep, warm brick red sienna earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness. All three of our Blue Ridge colors are natural iron-oxide pigments - clay deposits that over time have been saturated in limonite, which produces a yellow hue, and hematite, which produces a reddish hue.

A lake pigment that is smooth, semi-transparent and lightfast. It's made from a manufactured French mineral pigment fixed to a natural calcium carbonate base, which lands a soft and velvety matte finish when dry. A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.

Magnetite is a naturally occurring black mineral pigment which is also magnetic! Magnetite is also the natural version of Mars Black. Named in 1845 after the location where it was first sourced, Magnesia, Greece, black iron oxide has a long history of use as a pigment. A lustrous, opaque black pigment that is lightfast with a slight texture and cool undertone. A natural earth pigment that is lightfast and semi-transparent with slight texture. Umbers are brown or reddish-brown natural earth colors. This pigment consist of iron oxide and manganese oxide and in it's natural form is raw umber. After the pigment is heated, the color becomes darker and richer, transforming into burnt umber. * We have some seconds available in this color. We deem a half pan second quality when it is too low, too full or a bit cracked to sell at full price. Available until we run out!

Thursday, July 30, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Dorothy Hood was born in 1918 and spent her life in both Mexico and Texas. Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.

This abstract mark-making and mixed media workshop will explore intuitive ways of making marks to develop freedom and confidence in the process.
