This pattern started as a color experiment in Rebecca’s sketchbook as she played with layering blocks of color next to one another in tonal shades (or in the case of the multi-colored one – the occasional pop). Rebecca enjoys working with cut paper. The physicality of creating a shape out of a piece of paper, the way it makes the lines crisper, and the irreversibility of it are some of her favorite aspects of this method. There’s a bit you can’t control as you get going. She had the idea to create a leafy fern design by cutting long leaves out of the marbled papers. The softness of the marble against the graphic cut-out leaves creates a pattern within a pattern, a world within a world. With the large repeat, this design has a lot of movement and life.

Rebecca has been reflecting on the concepts of fields and hills. Looking out at the horizon, a landscape, or a panoramic view can be comforting. Round shapes are playful and evoke happiness, which is a feeling she always wants at home. She wanted to create something with round shapes, while also referencing the textures of grass, and the result was this pattern. It has movement to it and is airy and textural. Designed to coordinate with our Bubbles mural to continue the pattern onto a ceiling, this subtle print looks equally lovely on its own. It calls to mind fading seafoam or falling grains of sand, but without the larger mural for context it can also read as floating specks of dust, snow flurries, or tiny drops of beaded rain, all softly illuminated and suspended in motion.
