Rebecca Atwood Designs Marble Fern Fabric in Marine

Rebecca enjoys working with cut paper. The physicality of creating a shape out of a piece of paper, the way it makes the lines crisper, and the irreversibility of it are some of her favorite aspects of this method. There’s a bit you can’t control as you get going. She had this idea to create a leafy fern design by cutting long leaves out of the marbled papers. The softness of the marble against the graphic cut out leaves creates a pattern within a pattern, a world within a world. With the large repeat, this design has a lot of movement and life.

Use this fabric indoors or out. Throughout the years, Rebecca has explored long curved shapes in various ways and frequently doodled them in the corners of her notebooks. When she began to play with this linear shape for a woven, she explored how it could capture the way a breeze ripples through the spring air. By repeating this simple mark in varying darkness, she creates a pattern with movement. Some marks sink back into the ground of the cloth, whereas others pop against the background.

Use this fabric indoors or out. A small vintage fabric cutting Rebecca found in Tokyo, Japan inspired this fabric. It was a small-scale print that read geometric but also like a floral. She loved this idea for a textural woven and redrew the motif, adding the softness of her hand and increasing the size so that it would translate well as a woven. She thought a lot about landscape textures and how we need these textures in our homes to create the environment that feels best to us. Use this fabric to cover a sofa in a field of flowers, but viewed at a distance for a soft and easy vibe.

Designed to coordinate with our Bubbles mural to continue the pattern onto a ceiling, this subtle print looks equally lovely on its own. It calls to mind fading seafoam or falling grains of sand, but without the larger mural for context it can also read as floating specks of dust, snow flurries, or tiny drops of beaded rain, all softly illuminated and suspended in motion. A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling.
