A deep, warm brick red sienna earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness. All three of our Blue Ridge colors are natural iron-oxide pigments - clay deposits that over time have been saturated in limonite, which produces a yellow hue, and hematite, which produces a reddish hue.

A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Both colors are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Genuine Indigo is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant through a fermentation process, and further refined to achieve greater saturation and intensity.

A smooth, opaque and lightfast lake pigment. It’s made by fixing a manufactured French mineral pigment to a natural calcium carbonate base, which gives it a soft, velvety matte finish when dry. When we were developing our Custom Brush Roll Set collab with Gravel & Gold, we found this deep green hue in some of their fabrics. It gave us the perfect excuse to make our own new blended color—named for the iconic trees in our coastal neighborhood! Cypress contains a fair amount of our Indigo paint and some fluorescents, so it’s not completely lightfast. It's quite opaque and can provide a wide range of tones—at its darkest, it appears to be almost black!

Our ultimate blended brown! Cocoa is a careful mix of 6 (!!) of our core collection colors—the most out of all our blends, with Lime and Ruby in close second. Compared to Burnt Umber Dark and Reddish—both beautiful, single origin earth pigments that lend texture and transparency—Cocoa is a smooth, opaque alternative with a lovely ultra-matte finish. Their curious, playful natures are fascinating, and their graceful movements are full of joy. CfM Oxalis captures the cheery yellow of the California wildflower also known as Woodsorrel, which Bay Area locals might remember from childhood as Sourgrass. Here in San Francisco, Oxalis seems to pop up from every available patch of soil in mid-February, and we wanted to celebrate this annual harbinger of spring! Oxalis flowers make a wonderful, potent natural yellow dye, and CfM Oxalis was inspired by the flower and the slightly more orange dye bath.
