Alder repeats an abstract dripping pattern that reminded Rebecca of the catkins of an alder tree. The single-color print allows the linen ground (ivory or oatmeal, depending on the color) to show through, adding to its textured appearance—almost like a pair of Japanese selvedge jeans. KELP GREEN has yellowy undertones that remind Rebecca of seaweed and make it sunnier than our blue-greens. In this color, Alder appears to be almost swaying or growing underwater. Woven from a soft, nubby cotton-wool blend, each of the colors contains all the pigments Rebecca would use if she were mixing it with her paints. This fabric is intended for indoor use. For our first “solid” fabric, Rebecca wanted something that would be durable and a great basic, but that also made it easier to layer within a color palette—or even build one from. We rarely see flat colors in big swaths in nature. Our natural world is so complex. We see a field of grass, but it’s full of tonal variation and movement. She wanted to explore this concept in an upholstery fabric as if you covered your sofa in a natural landscape. This fabric is available as a pillow here .

A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling.
