Case for Making Nicosia Green

This lovely green is made of earth from the city Nicosia in Cyprus. It's light and transparent, with a slightly gritty texture. When Nicosia is fully saturated it resembles French Pale Green, though more transparent and textured. We've included a side by side image for comparison. All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness!

To let you in on the whole story we were actually working on making our own version of Sap Green and Olive revealed itself instead and we were immediately taken! It's deep, luxurious and has a rich velvety feel when it's dry. Don't worry, we're still working on Sap! You can't have too many greens, right? A rich yellow-toned green-brown earth pigment from France. This color offers a smooth consistency, high opacity and lightfastness. * We have some seconds available in this color. A smooth, semi-transparent and lightfast lake pigment. It’s made by fixing a manufactured French mineral pigment to a natural calcium carbonate base, which gives it a soft, velvety matte finish when dry. Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Both colors are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Genuine Indigo is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant through a fermentation process, and further refined to achieve greater saturation and intensity.

Thursday, July 30, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Dorothy Hood was born in 1918 and spent her life in both Mexico and Texas. Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.
