Alder repeats an abstract dripping pattern that reminded Rebecca of the catkins of an alder tree. This loose, painterly plaid started as a holiday card that Rebecca drew in watercolor pencil. She loved how the hazy effect of the pencil created a multicolor stripe that’s bright but livable and versatile. After using the fabric in her own home, she decided to print a wallpaper too. We used our non-woven fibre paper, but it almost has the feeling of grasscloth because it reads texturally.

This pattern was inspired by a picture Rebecca snapped of long grass while visiting Portland, Oregon. Travel heightens awareness of your surroundings and invites discovery. Rebecca remembers these long grasses leaning against one another, layering to create a rich texture. She started making a large painting and watched how the shapes connected and overlapped, and how the color could intertwine to create atmosphere. This fabric is intended for indoor use. For our first “solid” fabric, Rebecca wanted something that would be durable and a great basic, but that also made it easier to layer within a color palette—or even build one from. We rarely see flat colors in big swaths in nature. Our natural world is so complex. We see a field of grass, but it’s full of tonal variation and movement. She wanted to explore this concept in an upholstery fabric as if you covered your sofa in a natural landscape. This fabric is available as a pillow here .

A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling. Thickets of berry bushes inspired the name for this indoor upholstery-weight fabric.
