This loose, painterly plaid started as a holiday card that Rebecca drew in watercolor pencil. She loved how the hazy effect of the pencil created a multicolor stripe that’s bright but livable and versatile. After using the fabric in her own home, she decided to print a wallpaper too. We used our non-woven fibre paper, but it almost has the feeling of grasscloth because it reads texturally.

Rebecca wanted to design something soft and textural as if she had just slowly moved her brush up and down in small repetitive marks along a wall or across a piece of fabric—which is in fact how she painted this pattern but on a piece of paper. The soft texture created by a brush with only a bit of paint left on it creates a cozy soothing feeling, almost like white noise. Use this pattern like you would a grasscloth or texture. It’s soft and easy to mix with other patterns.

This crisp midweight upholstery fabric can create a range of moods depending on the color you choose—from cool ones that give a space a light, breezy feeling to grounded ones that bring warmth. Rebecca wanted each one to look sunwashed. PALE GOLDENROD has a little ochre in it that makes it stronger than a butter yellow, but it’s faded and softer than our other goldenrods and as versatile as natural linen. This pattern was created from an original painting from Rebecca’s sketchbook, which like many of her designs, began as a mark-making exercise. Creating a motif from small dashes and dots is a simple practice that can start on the corner of a notebook during a meeting or a warm-up practice for a painting session. While mark-making is often an exercise Rebecca uses to center herself in the present moment, the results often become the seed of a new design. The radiating lines of this deconstructed floral shape feel celebratory and are sure to bring joy to any space.

A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling.
