Muriama estate is a reimagined second-generation coffee farm in Kenya that reflects a family’s commitment to progress. Founded in 1954 with just 100 trees, the family spent decades selling coffee cherries to the local “coffee factory,” where they were processed and blended with coffee from other growers. Through incremental investments, they gained more control over how their coffee tastes and where it’s sold. Years of quality improvement have culminated in the bold, yet delicate flavors in the cup: bright grapefruit acidity balanced by black currant compote sweetness and a silky mouthfeel.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail K’uychi
Since 2015, we’ve purchased coffee from producers nestled deep in the mountains of Nariño, Colombia. The area has a history of heavy guerrilla activity that, for decades, isolated the community and discouraged collective business efforts. Against all odds, the producers of K’uychi have worked together to improve their farms, conserve their community’s natural resources, and bring us this wonderful coffee. We taste notes of green grape, clementine, and milk chocolate. Pronunciation…

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Fundochamba - Extended Fermentation
Fundochamba is a small mountain community just outside of Quilanga in Ecuador’s Loja province. We purchase from a group of 14 growers in this area who have worked together to steadily improve quality and connect with the specialty market. This year, the group dedicated a small portion of their volume to a prolonged fermentation experiment. After pulping, this coffee was fermented in a cool, low-oxygen environment for about 72 hours. The resulting cup offers intricate fruit complexity and sweetness. We taste dark-fruit notes of concord grape and black cherry, swimming in a sweet, syrupy body.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Mountain Harvest Peaberry
This coffee comes to us via Mountain Harvest, a company working to improve the quality of Ugandan coffee while making the communities that grow it more sustainable. This coffee is a special peaberry selection from farms on Mount Elgon. Peaberries occur when one seed develops inside a coffee fruit instead of two. Sorting them out is extra work, but it’s worth it for their dynamic and sweet flavors. We taste apricot, black tea, and coconut.

Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Finca Aurora – Anaerobic Java
The Java variety has a long history, with its genetic origins traced to regional landraces in western Ethiopia. As a variety known for producing high quality, the team at Finca Aurora has experimented with anaerobic processing to further accentuate Java’s unique potential. When done well, coffees processed in this way often result in profiles that are more fruit-forward and vibrant than their traditionally-washed counterparts. This particular convergence of genetics and anaerobic processing produced one of the most unique coffees we've tasted from Nicaragua.

This coffee represents the continued evolution of a partnership we’ve maintained for nearly 2 decades. Growers in the Orgánica cooperative have focused on achieving the highest quality in every aspect of their production, including planting higher-quality, harder-to-grow varieties. Counter Culture Coffee - Retail Bijao
Huila is a rare origin for us—most of the Colombian coffees we buy come from long-term partners in the regions of Nariño and Cauca, but this year we began exploring Huila's slightly offset harvest cycle to source fresher coffee for our 100% Colombian product: Gradient. What started as a logistical curiosity led us to Bijao, a group of small producers near the community of La Plata whose name comes from a native plant traditionally used to wrap tamales.
