Case for Making French Vermilion

A bright orange-red vermilion pigment formulated synthetically to simulate the characteristics of the mineral pigment Vermilion and eliminate the use of mercury. This rich color has high opacity, good lightfastness and a smooth texture. True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of being used throughout history and around the world from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts and the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. It was even used as a rouge-like cosmetic in ancient West Asia.

A natural light ochre earth pigment sourced in France, lightfast and semi-transparent. Has a smooth texture and works well as a highlight color. We have some seconds available in this color. We deem a half pan second quality when it is too low, too full or a bit too cracked to sell at full price. Available until we run out! All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness!

This lovely, complex blend features five of our core collection colors: some bright, some deep, and all opaque. Among our reds, Ruby fits right in the middle between French Vermilion (which is brighter and closer to the orange scale), and Primary Red (which is cooler with blue undertones). Like the gemstone, our Ruby is multi-faceted—the perfect color for capturing everything from berry fruit-leather to a Cardinal’s winter plumage, or the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset! This color contains fluorescent pigment, which is not lightfast.

Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Their curious, playful natures are fascinating, and their graceful movements are full of joy. Observing them swimming in the San Francisco Bay inspired me to loosen my approach to painting and respond more intuitively to the natural world. In this workshop we’ll explore foundational watercolor techniques such as wet-into-wet, layering, and more, with an emphasis on using minimal, fluid brushstrokes to paint these streamlined creatures.
