Dotted with a symmetrical arrangement of eyelets, the Kenchiku Wrap’s lace motif builds off of each repeat to resemble chain link or rows of crowned hearts, depending on the piece’s orientation. Delicate in nature but donning the strength of its design without sacrificing tensile cohesion, Kenchiku is a true testament to the magic of lace knitting that takes full advantage of Vale’s ethereal fabric. This lace stole is worked flat in two pieces, each from the cast-on edge to the center. The pieces are then joined using the Kitchener Stitch.

Islands and ripples of stockinette in a sea of delicate lace mark this beautiful stole. The sense of balance and organic movement in Irina’s distinctive aesthetic makes this piece feel like an instant heirloom. A provisional cast-on allows you to work in two directions, knitting the center panel and one end before picking up stitches from the cast-on to mirror the motifs on the other end.

Brooklyn Tweed Lunette

Lace butterflies skirt this shawl and sweep up the center in a merry flock. The knitting begins with a large cast-on for the full length of the trailing edge. A line of eyelets creates an effect reminiscent of crochet. The scalloped edge motifs soften the triangular inner forms into an organic deep crescent that naturally wraps your shoulders and hangs prettily in place without the aid of a pin. This is piquant lace knitting, with no “resting rows” between lace maneuvers in many of the charts. Directions are given for four sizes; the two smallest can be worked from a single skein of Plains.

Brooklyn Tweed Loden

Brooklyn Tweed Loden

Worked in Peerie or Loft from the edge up with botanical motifs and openwork, this lace triangle is a formal garden of smocked stitches. The smocking rings a single stitch around its neighbors, gathering up clusters that also decrease the stitch count to achieve the shaping. Loden is active knitting that will require your full attention; there’s always something happening on right side rows, while wrong side rows let you catch your breath. Most of the charts are simple and easily memorizable, but the smocking stitches may involve an exciting maneuver you haven’t tried before.

Véronik created a luxuriously soft and snuggly stole by working with Loft on a large needle and lace-blocking the finished fabric. Simple garter stitch is transformed into a pillowy, cloudlike stole that is equally at home wrapped around the shoulders or bundled under a winter coat as a long scarf. The charted half of the stole features a graphic lace snowflake motif, while the second half is filled with a random eyelet “snow” pattern. The inscribed lines of lacework within the graphic Linocut shawl evoke the deep carvings of this traditional printmaking technique. Featuring a modular motif too alluring to limit to one shape, this pattern comes written and charted for both a triangle shawl and a rectangular wrap in two sizes. Elegant three-dimensional geometry cuts a field of raised garter lace throughout, echoing the dip and curve of traditional horseshoe cables. An optional Icelandic Bind Off accentuates Peerie ’s plump stitches and gives your lace space to shine.

Brooklyn Tweed Riverbend

A boxy, open-gauge cardigan in Quarry: the ultimate in slouchy comfort that doesn’t sacrifice good looks. Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.
