Rebecca Atwood Designs Sun and Moon in Dennis Green Pillow

This design began as a painting in Rebecca’s sketchbook while visiting Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Inspired by the sun and moon ceramics hanging on the door of the hotel, Rebecca created her own interpretation of this celestial concept. The fabric was woven in India, the sun motif was hand-screen printed, and finally the moon motifs were embroidered. This fabric is available as a pillow here .

This pattern began as a large painting. Rebecca experimented with a resist technique and dotted each larger circle with smaller marks. The resulting motifs referenced radial patterns found in the natural world, from flowers to sand dollars, as well as the passage of time. A simple plaid, this design started as a meditative practice to begin a painting session. Rebecca used India Ink, overlaying the same wash of ink to create a basket-like weave. The subtle darkening that occurs when one long stripe crosses over the next was pleasing to watch. Reminiscent of fencing, it calls to mind the different structures we use to tame nature within a garden. The repetition and structure they provide feel settling. Alder repeats an abstract dripping pattern that reminded Rebecca of the catkins of an alder tree. The single-color print allows our creamy nonwoven fiber paper ground to show through, enhancing its textured appearance. You expect it to feel like a pair of Japanese selvedge jeans when you touch it. PALE GOLDENROD is stronger than butter yellow, but it has a faded quality that makes it softer than our other goldenrods. Use it in place of natural linen to bring sunshine into a space.

Use this fabric indoors or out. A small vintage fabric cutting Rebecca found in Tokyo, Japan inspired this fabric. It was a small-scale print that read geometric but also like a floral. She loved this idea for a textural woven and redrew the motif, adding the softness of her hand and increasing the size so that it would translate well as a woven. She thought a lot about landscape textures and how we need these textures in our homes to create the environment that feels best to us. Use this fabric to cover a sofa in a field of flowers, but viewed at a distance for a soft and easy vibe.
