Our response to September 9th, 2020, when smoke and ash from a devastating fire season hovered above the Bay Area marine layer, blocking out the daylight. A deep reddish-pink synthetic formulated to simulate the characteristics of the mineral pigment Vermilion, without the use of mercury. This lovely core color is highly opaque and smooth. True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of use around the world, from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts, to illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Both colors are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Our ultimate blended brown! Cocoa is a careful mix of 6 (!!) of our core collection colors—the most out of all our blends, with Lime and Ruby in close second. Compared to Burnt Umber Dark and Reddish—both beautiful, single origin earth pigments that lend texture and transparency—Cocoa is a smooth, opaque alternative with a lovely ultra-matte finish.
