"This ethereal shawl or blanket is an homage to traditional hap shawls of the Shetland islands. These beautiful, utilitarian shawls were made and worn to protect the wearer from the harsh weather conditions of the Scottish Isles. The wavy lace motifs on the broad border were often used as a canvas for color experimentation (like our striped variations), but haps are equally stunning in a solid color, where natural shades of wool allow the delicate textures to shine. The pattern calls for fingering-weight yarn, but it can be upsized easily using sport, DK, or even worsted weight.

“The traditional Shetland Hap shawl is a genre that I gravitate to time and again in my design work. I find it to be such a great combination of beauty & utility, while providing a comforting and interesting knitting experience. For this variation I wanted to modernize the look by creating an interesting, non-traditional construction, playing with tonal color variations, and adding bands of elongated stitches into the traditional shale border motif.

Brooklyn Tweed Yuha
The Yuha shawl was made for those moments of transition, when the heat of day cools and the rich red sun dips toward the horizon. Worked from the bottom up, this triangular shawl can be knit as large as you like — be it bandana-sized for a night out or a cozy cocoon for tired kiddos. Inspired by the multicolored layers of rich terroir, Yuha balances interest and ease with its dual stripes and contrasting columns of texture. Written for both DK weight Arbor or Dapple and fingering weight Peerie, you are sure to find vibrant colors that speak to your heart.

Brooklyn Tweed Tweed Baby Blanket
This square-shaped baby blanket was inspired by traditional Hap Shawls of the Shetland Islands. The center square, which is knitted on both RS and WS, is worked on the bias and creates diagonal ridges of Garter Stitch. The “Old Shale” lace frame is picked up directly from the center square and worked in the round. The project is finished with an I-Cord Bind Off for a piping-like finish. Brooklyn Tweed Tilt
“Tilting diagonal bands radiate from the center of this square first in one direction, then the other, through the border. Paired eyelets separate bands of stockinette stitch and moss stitch, with leaves sprouting from the border to create an edge in soft contrast to the clean geometric lines. Sweet, simple, and quick to work up, this shawl would make an equally wonderful baby blanket.”− Leila Raven Designer: Leila Raven Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Wheaten
“A cozy rectangle to knit in two yarn weights (fingering or worsted) and four sizes (scarf/wrap/small throw/large throw). Twining lines in a rich brocade motif add an organic element that relieves the pattern’s formal structure and translates beautifully in both jewel tones and pale shades from nature. Ribbed hems provide a classic, neat finish to the edges.”− Anne Hanson Designer: Anne Hanson Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Amulet
Bold geometric motifs reminiscent of woven wool blankets give this Shelter poncho lasting appeal. Worked from charts in textured knit, purl, and slipped stitches, Amulet begins with shoulder shaping and is worked downward to the center of the front and back. Consecutive bands of twisted stitches create a horizontal braid effect to divide the motifs. The lower pieces are knit from the hem up and joined to form a decorative ridge. This light, warm garment can be pivoted 90 degrees and worn with the side ribbing as the front hem for an alternate look.

Brooklyn Tweed Paddock Shawl
Watch the flyways while wrapped in a light and pretty demilune shawl. Paddock Shawl’s arcs of lengthening lozenges, expanding with concentric increases according to Elizabeth Zimmermann’s half-pi method, form a richly textured plumage. The garter-based fabric has no wrong side, and the half-circle shape laps the shoulders comfortably and stays in place. Slipped garter selvedges create a smooth and tidy top edge; block out scalloped points or leave the trailing edge straight according to your preference.

Brooklyn Tweed Rock Island
A ribbon of zigzag lace with a yarnover selvedge forms the foundation for this pretty triangular shawl. Stitches picked up from the yarnovers take a few steadying ridges of garter stitch while decreases are established at the edges and spine, then begin to intermingle in a traditional two-sided lace pattern before relaxing into an ever-diminishing field of garter. This perfect balance of focused effort and straightforward plain knitting has made Rock Island an enduring favorite in the Brooklyn Tweed archives. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Classics ; Vale…

Brooklyn Tweed Rook
“During the design process, my aim was to create a timeless garment containing both traditional and modern features. I chose a diamond motif with moss stitch that I saw in a fisherman’s sweater because not only is it a beautifully textured stitch, but I can also use it either as a single line of diamonds (as in the sleeve) or a line of multiple diamonds (as in the body). Instead of having a traditional vertical line of purl stitches on either side, I used stockinette stitch to encircle the motif to keep the whole design clean and simple. The sweater is knit top down.

Brooklyn Tweed Spearheads
A bold Icelandic-style yoke printed with a spirograph of interlacing chevrons is striking on anybody. Spearheads knits up lightning fast in two high-contrast colors of Quarry to fend off the winter chill. We paired Gypsum with Lazulite and Hematite; imagine the yoke in Citrine on a background of Obsidian or marry Slate with Sandstone for a mellow contrast. Reversing the dark and light colors should be equally successful. Choose single or double rib for the hem, cuffs and neckband according to your liking. Pattern includes unisex sizing. Brooklyn Tweed Trillium
“One of the magical things about hand knitting is the formation of the fabric at the same time as the creation of the piece. And because of this, the seamless yoked cardigan is something of a magic trick. A long-time favorite among knitters, I wanted to give this traditional silhouette a modern twist with an updated ribbing, but keep some tradition by using nupps. I hope this finds its way into your Fall wardrobe.” – Michele Wang Designer: Michele Wang Collection: Fall…

Brooklyn Tweed Trestle
“I love chevrons! I cannot get enough. I particularly love how they distort a seemingly straightforward row of knitting into spectacular peaks and valleys. Pair a chevron with the humble stripe and boom! My knitter’s heart beats a little faster. Taking into account that chevrons don’t make a rectangular shape on their own, I have helped them out by filling in the corners. This creates a few extra pieces to knit to make a shape that resembles a sweater, but the end result is a garment that is interesting to knit. Interesting to knit while being all knit!

Brooklyn Tweed Auden
“This design draws inspiration from both the new and old. I was intrigued by the modernity and drape of an oversized dolman tee, and I also loved the soft femininity of the simple, delicate prints of liberty cotton and vintage summer dresses. This pullover combines the two into the best of both worlds: a gentle, fern-like, allover cable motif joins with a loose and wonderfully drapey shape to create the perfect spring or summer sweater.” – Bristol Ivy Designer: Bristol Ivy Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Bundle into a plush, oversized turtleneck pullover for late-season trips to the mountains. Laura Chau puts a surprising slant on uncomplicated cables and ribs by working Bracondale’s front and back on the bias. The sweater begins with the ribbed side panels, back, and front worked individually and seamed together. The ribbed sleeves are worked in the round from stitches picked up at the armholes; the turtleneck is picked up and worked in the round, then completed with a tubular bind-off for elasticity and a professional finish.

The stockinette button band is flanked on either side by a pair of simple cables, while the garment’s body and three-quarter sleeves are trimmed with an optional contrasting color rolled edge. The generous scoop neck begs to be styled with shirts featuring interesting collars (or cowls).

Brooklyn Tweed Loess
“The inspiration for Loess came from my life on Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France — very wild and natural, with a little smell of sea spray. This stole is light, soft, and worked with bands of crisply defined patterning.” – Christine de Castelbajac Riffles of openwork and crossed stitches punctuate the smooth surface of stockinette in this elegant, modern scarf. The pattern offers two sizes, a small scarf and a generous wrap.
