This square-shaped baby blanket was inspired by traditional Hap Shawls of the Shetland Islands. The center square, which is knitted on both RS and WS, is worked on the bias and creates diagonal ridges of Garter Stitch. The “Old Shale” lace frame is picked up directly from the center square and worked in the round. The project is finished with an I-Cord Bind Off for a piping-like finish. Brooklyn Tweed Tilt
“Tilting diagonal bands radiate from the center of this square first in one direction, then the other, through the border. Paired eyelets separate bands of stockinette stitch and moss stitch, with leaves sprouting from the border to create an edge in soft contrast to the clean geometric lines. Sweet, simple, and quick to work up, this shawl would make an equally wonderful baby blanket.”− Leila Raven Designer: Leila Raven Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Bairn
Cast on a beautiful cabled heirloom. Bairn is given in two versions: a large nap blanket knit in Shelter that will serve a child as he grows or make a handsome throw in the living room, and a smaller baby blanket worked in Loft to tuck into a pram or use as a stylish nursing cover. The twining serpentines of the central motif and the echoing cables are easy to track and memorize once they’re established, making this a soothing, contemplative knit. Lightweight and warm in either size, Bairn will remain a family favorite after the little ones are grown. Designer: Julie Hoover Collection: Kids…

Brooklyn Tweed Quill
"This ethereal shawl or blanket is an homage to traditional hap shawls of the Shetland islands. These beautiful, utilitarian shawls were made and worn to protect the wearer from the harsh weather conditions of the Scottish Isles. The wavy lace motifs on the broad border were often used as a canvas for color experimentation (like our striped variations), but haps are equally stunning in a solid color, where natural shades of wool allow the delicate textures to shine. The pattern calls for fingering-weight yarn, but it can be upsized easily using sport, DK, or even worsted weight.

Brooklyn Tweed Bridgewater
Bridgewater begins as a simple garter stitch square, worked on the bias with increases and decreases to add a touch of asymmetrical interest to the finished piece. The central square is framed with horseshoe lace, a pattern that originated in the Shetland Islands in the 19th century, worked circularly from stitches picked up around the perimeter. The shawl is completed with a traditional knitted-on edging reminiscent of water droplets, worked perpendicularly and joined to the live stitches as you go.

Brooklyn Tweed Kelpie
“The traditional Shetland Hap shawl is a genre that I gravitate to time and again in my design work. I find it to be such a great combination of beauty & utility, while providing a comforting and interesting knitting experience. For this variation I wanted to modernize the look by creating an interesting, non-traditional construction, playing with tonal color variations, and adding bands of elongated stitches into the traditional shale border motif.

Brooklyn Tweed Wheaten
“A cozy rectangle to knit in two yarn weights (fingering or worsted) and four sizes (scarf/wrap/small throw/large throw). Twining lines in a rich brocade motif add an organic element that relieves the pattern’s formal structure and translates beautifully in both jewel tones and pale shades from nature. Ribbed hems provide a classic, neat finish to the edges.”− Anne Hanson Designer: Anne Hanson Collection: Wool People, Volume…

This lace rectangle, inspired by traditional Orenburg shawls of Russia, has a built-in sawtooth edging and features a traditional Shetland Rose motif within the center panel. The fabric is knit on both sides (no purling), though the lace patterning is only ever worked on RS rows. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Loft…

Brooklyn Tweed Rock Island
A ribbon of zigzag lace with a yarnover selvedge forms the foundation for this pretty triangular shawl. Stitches picked up from the yarnovers take a few steadying ridges of garter stitch while decreases are established at the edges and spine, then begin to intermingle in a traditional two-sided lace pattern before relaxing into an ever-diminishing field of garter. This perfect balance of focused effort and straightforward plain knitting has made Rock Island an enduring favorite in the Brooklyn Tweed archives. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Classics ; Vale…

Here is the lovely Berenice all grown up! Brooklyn Tweed Racines
"This shawl developed around a cable that I couldn’t get out of my head, and when its meandering tendrils are turned upside down they bring to mind complex, interlocking root systems. The garter stitch top and bottom borders lend visual grounding, but a sense of upward movement as well to counter the downward-tangling cables.

Brooklyn Tweed Douro
Light and lofty brioche stitch makes the ideal wrap or lap blanket. Douro explores the possibilities of traveling lines in brioche, wandering from symmetry to asymmetry and back to regular ribs. The two halves culminate in a band of garter stitch fused at the center spine with the Joinery Bind-Off. Worked from written instructions, this pattern is a good way to step up from basic brioche knitting. Designer: Norah Gaughan Collection: Winter…

Corrugated texture provides a trellis for twining cables at the center front and back. Brooklyn Tweed Roko
"The thick strands of both Arbor Lodge and Quarry are ideal for oversized cables and this quality was the starting inspiration point for this vest. Invested with a heavy dose of classic fisherman sweater vibes, these cables are plumped up to an almost cartoonish degree, and lend a light-hearted air to an easy-going layering piece." — designer, Lis Smith Quarry Barn Owl sample photographed with Grooves Cap by Jared Flood. Brooklyn Tweed Riverbend
A boxy, open-gauge cardigan in Quarry: the ultimate in slouchy comfort that doesn’t sacrifice good looks. Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.

Brooklyn Tweed Stonecutter
“To give the basic Aran pullover a little pizzazz, I added the bias cables on the front and back pieces. They add interest not only by changing the flow of the cables, but by changing the entire silhouette of the sweater. The biasing gives the slightest hint of a peplum and accentuates the waist naturally. And to keep the femininity, the neckband is a soft rollover versus a traditional ribbed neckband.” – Michele Wang Designer: Michele Wang Collection: Fall…
