Traditionally constructed using the Shetland method of knitting the main triangle first, followed by the edging, the Maquette shawl is a classic accessory deserving of space in your handmade closet. A rounded tip along the bottom edge in addition to a garter stitch frame softens the otherwise edgy broken diamond motif that works its way across the center. Knit one for yourself in Arbor using either the provided written or charted instructions, and then another in Peerie as one can never have too many shawls. Brooklyn Tweed Brora
This distinctive shawl, printed all over with triangles of garter stitch, can be worked in two weights. Knit a breezy complement to summer dresses in Vale or a slightly larger triangle with comforting weight and warmth in Arbor. The arrowhead lace edging combines garter stitch and eyelets to achieve a flintknapped texture. The pattern teaches the Icelandic Bind Off technique to yield an elastic edge that partners effectively with garter stitch. Designer: Gudrun Johnston Collection…

Brooklyn Tweed Juneberry
Snuggle down in a warm woolen triangle of botanical lace. Juneberry can be worked in DK-weight Arbor to yield a wingspan of 44½” or in worsted weight Shelter for a 61″ shawl. The knitting begins with a provisional cast-on of a few stitches at the center top; increases at the center spine and edges form the triangle shape. In the traditional Shetland style, a wide knitted-on edging unites with the live stitches at the perimeter for an elastic and seamless finish. Juneberry is worked from charted instructions, some of which require lace maneuvers on both sides of the work.

Brooklyn Tweed Halligarth
A tribute to a beautiful woodland in the designer’s native Shetland, this shawl uses a traditional lace motif to depict a copse of trees. The triangular shape grows from a single stitch. The stitches are left live along the long edge while yarn-over loops are picked up along the other two edges to anchor the lace edging, which is worked sideways (perpendicular to the body of the shawl). Halligarth can be worked as a shawlette or as a more traditional large shawl. Designer: Gudrun Johnston Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Auna
The geometric motif and dusky palette of the Auna shawl evoke a sunset hitting a high desert cliff. Knit with Vale , a laceweight yarn spun from 100% USA-grown Rambouillet wool, Auna’s simple garter-stitch triangles strike the perfect balance of whisper-soft drape and enduring springiness. Each triangle is shaped with simple yarnovers and worked separately. After seaming, the border is picked up around the edge and knit in the round. Designer: Gudrun Johnston Collection: Fall…

Brooklyn Tweed Sandness
“This shawl is worked using a modified version of a traditional Shetland construction. In this case stockinette stitch replaces the typical garter stitch used in the center triangle portion of the shawl. As with the traditional method, yarn overs are worked at the beginning of every row creating visual loops, which are then picked up to work the border. Sandness is intended as a bigger cousin companion to my Norby beanie as they share the same textured pattern.

Brooklyn Tweed Bridgewater
Bridgewater begins as a simple garter stitch square, worked on the bias with increases and decreases to add a touch of asymmetrical interest to the finished piece. The central square is framed with horseshoe lace, a pattern that originated in the Shetland Islands in the 19th century, worked circularly from stitches picked up around the perimeter. The shawl is completed with a traditional knitted-on edging reminiscent of water droplets, worked perpendicularly and joined to the live stitches as you go.

Brooklyn Tweed Spearheads
A bold Icelandic-style yoke printed with a spirograph of interlacing chevrons is striking on anybody. Spearheads knits up lightning fast in two high-contrast colors of Quarry to fend off the winter chill. We paired Gypsum with Lazulite and Hematite; imagine the yoke in Citrine on a background of Obsidian or marry Slate with Sandstone for a mellow contrast. Brooklyn Tweed Rock Island
A ribbon of zigzag lace with a yarnover selvedge forms the foundation for this pretty triangular shawl. Stitches picked up from the yarnovers take a few steadying ridges of garter stitch while decreases are established at the edges and spine, then begin to intermingle in a traditional two-sided lace pattern before relaxing into an ever-diminishing field of garter. This perfect balance of focused effort and straightforward plain knitting has made Rock Island an enduring favorite in the Brooklyn Tweed archives. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Classics ; Vale…

Brooklyn Tweed Counterpane
For knitters who love a geometric puzzle, this study in modular asymmetry will keep the brain and the needles busy. Constructed in squares and triangles worked from the edges inward, Counterpane uses bands of stockinette, garter, and brioche to create three-dimensional texture as well as arresting diagonal lines. Each section is worked on stitches picked up from the previous square and newly cast on. The sleeve cuffs achieve a subtle bloused form by echoing the brioche and garter bands of the blocks. Brooklyn Tweed Rook
“During the design process, my aim was to create a timeless garment containing both traditional and modern features. I chose a diamond motif with moss stitch that I saw in a fisherman’s sweater because not only is it a beautifully textured stitch, but I can also use it either as a single line of diamonds (as in the sleeve) or a line of multiple diamonds (as in the body). Instead of having a traditional vertical line of purl stitches on either side, I used stockinette stitch to encircle the motif to keep the whole design clean and simple. The sweater is knit top down.

Brooklyn Tweed Berenice
Here is the lovely Berenice all grown up! This piece features the same delightful combination of delicate lace and cables from little Berenice, but trades the reverse stockinette background for knit-facing stockinette, and the short-sleeved dolman construction for a long-sleeved, boxier drop-shoulder, resulting in a garment that is simultaneously relaxed and refined. Work Berenice in Loft for light, tweedy texture that feels like a cloud or in Peerie for a sleek and polished drape. This pullover is worked flat, in pieces, from the bottom up, then sewn together.

Brooklyn Tweed Loess
“The inspiration for Loess came from my life on Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France — very wild and natural, with a little smell of sea spray. This stole is light, soft, and worked with bands of crisply defined patterning.” – Christine de Castelbajac Riffles of openwork and crossed stitches punctuate the smooth surface of stockinette in this elegant, modern scarf. The pattern offers two sizes, a small scarf and a generous wrap.
