“This shawl is worked using a modified version of a traditional Shetland construction. In this case stockinette stitch replaces the typical garter stitch used in the center triangle portion of the shawl. As with the traditional method, yarn overs are worked at the beginning of every row creating visual loops, which are then picked up to work the border. Sandness is intended as a bigger cousin companion to my Norby beanie as they share the same textured pattern.

Brooklyn Tweed Shoal

Plot your course with Shoal, an ever familiar triangular shawl made anew with a unique asymmetrical side-to-side construction. Then, watch seas of garter stitch, plunging waves, and the wings of waterfowl come together in a beautiful triumvirate, balancing textural and openwork stitches for a beautiful seascape to drape about your shoulders. This shawl is worked flat from the upper right point to the opposite side; the lace motif is worked from charts only. The Vale and Peerie versions are worked from the same charts and instructions, at differing gauges.

Brooklyn Tweed Winnowing

This pretty shawl is worked seamlessly in two parts and once finished, resembles a Faroese Crescent. The Shawl Body is worked first, utilizing a center-out construction. Upon completion of the first section, a Knitted-On Border is worked and consumes live stitches from Shawl Body, negating the need for a traditional bind-off. The shape may look peculiar as you knit, but as with most lace knitting, it blooms into a gorgeous finished shape after blocking. Designer: Bristol Ivy Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Bridgewater
Arts & Crafts

Brooklyn Tweed Bridgewater

Bridgewater begins as a simple garter stitch square, worked on the bias with increases and decreases to add a touch of asymmetrical interest to the finished piece. The central square is framed with horseshoe lace, a pattern that originated in the Shetland Islands in the 19th century, worked circularly from stitches picked up around the perimeter. The shawl is completed with a traditional knitted-on edging reminiscent of water droplets, worked perpendicularly and joined to the live stitches as you go.

“The traditional Shetland Hap shawl is a genre that I gravitate to time and again in my design work. I find it to be such a great combination of beauty & utility, while providing a comforting and interesting knitting experience. For this variation I wanted to modernize the look by creating an interesting, non-traditional construction, playing with tonal color variations, and adding bands of elongated stitches into the traditional shale border motif.

This distinctive shawl, printed all over with triangles of garter stitch, can be worked in two weights. Knit a breezy complement to summer dresses in Vale or a slightly larger triangle with comforting weight and warmth in Arbor. The arrowhead lace edging combines garter stitch and eyelets to achieve a flintknapped texture. Brooklyn Tweed Juneberry

Snuggle down in a warm woolen triangle of botanical lace. Juneberry can be worked in DK-weight Arbor to yield a wingspan of 44½” or in worsted weight Shelter for a 61″ shawl. The knitting begins with a provisional cast-on of a few stitches at the center top; increases at the center spine and edges form the triangle shape. In the traditional Shetland style, a wide knitted-on edging unites with the live stitches at the perimeter for an elastic and seamless finish. Juneberry is worked from charted instructions, some of which require lace maneuvers on both sides of the work.

A ribbon of zigzag lace with a yarnover selvedge forms the foundation for this pretty triangular shawl. Stitches picked up from the yarnovers take a few steadying ridges of garter stitch while decreases are established at the edges and spine, then begin to intermingle in a traditional two-sided lace pattern before relaxing into an ever-diminishing field of garter. This perfect balance of focused effort and straightforward plain knitting has made Rock Island an enduring favorite in the Brooklyn Tweed archives. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Classics ; Vale…

"This shawl developed around a cable that I couldn’t get out of my head, and when its meandering tendrils are turned upside down they bring to mind complex, interlocking root systems. Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.

Rhythmic all-over cables in Shelter produce a handsome, seaworthy cap that’s quick and satisfying to knit. After a short band of 1 x 1 rib, the hat breaks into a geometric motif of interlocking tiered cables. Perfect for knitters who have tried some basic cables and feel ready for more challenge, the charts are predictable and easy to memorize. The pattern includes a modification for a slightly shorter beanie length. Deep texture means the pattern won’t be lost in dark colors, so this design is a good choice for Cast Iron, Soot, Artifact, Old World, or Plume.
