Julie’s Turnagain cowl is a masterful study of color and pattern – featuring a double-sided fabric composed of two distinctly different (and equally appealing) striping patterns. This versatile piece allows for several styling options: display the bold, color-block-style of the first side or the rhythmic, narrow stripes of the other. Shift the position of the fold line and you can display a combination of both sides while wearing. With four different colorways included, and endless options for your own color creativity, here is a great opportunity for a truly one-of-a-kind accessory.

Brooklyn Tweed Jujika
A puzzle of interlocking crosses makes for simple but engaging colorwork in this double-sided cowl. Jujika is knit width-wise in the round from a provisional cast-on, then folded and joined into a tube. The pattern offers a choice between Joinery bind-off for a quick finish or grafting in the two-color pattern for seamless perfection. The samples use strong contrast to show the tessellating crosses to full effect, but this motif is bold enough to support the use of more closely related colors, too.

Brooklyn Tweed Furl
There’s no wrong way to wear this textural cowl. The pattern of garter cluster stitches creates energetic ripples on one side and bubbles on the other. The clusters form over seven rows with the stitch count expanding and then gathering back in, which keeps the knitting adventurous but well within the abilities of the bright-eyed intermediate. Furl is worked in the round with tubular edge treatments and can be worn loose about the neck or with an extra wrap to keep your throat warm.

Brooklyn Tweed High Pines Cowl
Branching half-twisted rib and knit-purl texture shifts combine to decorate this shaped cowl with stitchwork that conjures alpine evergreens. Columns of clustered stitches that are decreased and then restored in the same maneuver punctuate the motifs, which subtly diminish toward the top edge for a fit that’s wider at the shoulders and slightly closer about the neck. Brooklyn Tweed Mason
A snuggly cowl with simple but striking stitchwork makes the perfect deep winter accessory. Tailor Mason to your climate by selecting a double-stranded version for serious warmth or working with a single strand for a cowl appropriate to milder weather. Both Masons use ridges of a contrast color interrupted by slipped stitches for a woven effect that’s eye catching but simple to execute. Brooklyn Tweed Tavola
Tavola takes the staple boxy pullover and adds to it the joy of color and texture. Its silhouette remains simple to provide an ample canvas for graphic “striping” that is both intriguing and satisfying to work. Alternating between two colors every other row while alternating between blocks of knits and purls across the rows creates a visual effect rather like brickwork. This motif is carried through the sleeves, while the hems, cuffs, and upper chest remain in a single color for a color blocked effect. Exposed seams at the shoulders complement the piece’s architectural flair.

Wrap up two elegant ways in the same cocoon cardigan. Turn it upside down and the fronts hang with an intriguing zigzag, the sleeves bare your elbows, and the ribbing curves gracefully below hip length. Brooklyn Tweed Leaves of Grass
A good Pi Shawl is always welcome in my knitting bag. This type of construction, developed by Elizabeth Zimmermann in the 1950’s, is a perfect balance between mindless and attentive knitting. Upon completion of Chart A, the entire shawl will have only 4 total shaping rounds remaining. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this project will fly off your needles! Named after the stunning collection of poetry by American poet Walt Whitman, these pretty motifs remind me of the Spring Thaw and the plant life that returns after Winter’s end. Kumon is the perfect balance of mindless and mindful and familiar and exciting, encouraging the hands’ second nature by beginning with the well-known rib stitch before seamlessly flourishing into sumptuous half-brioche. Uncomplicated yet thoughtful in shape, this piece is a sure layer to reach for during the cool hours of a misty morning. The garment in Arbor is worked flat in one piece from the bottom to the armholes, then back and fronts are worked separately to the shoulder. Brooklyn Tweed Maki
The subtle simplicity of Maki calls for a closer look, which reveals that there is more to this design than meets the eye. The flattering A-line silhouette is accented by rows of welts on the back yoke for satisfying texture that also peeks out and around to the front of the shoulders, like angular epaulettes. The rolled neckline, garter stitch trims, and notched vents at the hems serve as balancing counterpoints that echo the framing of the back yoke. Wear Maki as a year-round layering piece with beguiling elegance.

Brooklyn Tweed Lolo
Architectural lines and innovative construction elevate an aviator cap you can knit with a single skein of Shelter. Lolo is worked sideways from a provisional cast-on; crown shaping is achieved with short rows while increases and decreases form a sinuous brim that covers the ears. Lines of slipped stitches flow across the garter background to accentuate the shaping and create sculptural shifts in texture. This unisex hat can be knit in multiple sizes by changing needle size and gauge; directions are given for 18” and 20” circumferences.

Brooklyn Tweed Tundra
A top-down Quarry yoke patterned with large leaves makes a deeply satisfying knit and a cozy garment that will become a winter favorite. The cabled motif smoothly incorporates some of the yoke increases within the structure of the “veins,” so read the chart closely. Subtle details — unusual hem and cuff treatments combining rib and stockinette; tiny reversible cables carried up from the yoke design into the ribbed turtleneck at the center front — strike just the right notes. Tundra is designed to fall to the low hip, so choose a size that allows freedom of movement.

Brooklyn Tweed Spearheads
A bold Icelandic-style yoke printed with a spirograph of interlacing chevrons is striking on anybody. Spearheads knits up lightning fast in two high-contrast colors of Quarry to fend off the winter chill. We paired Gypsum with Lazulite and Hematite; imagine the yoke in Citrine on a background of Obsidian or marry Slate with Sandstone for a mellow contrast. Reversing the dark and light colors should be equally successful. Choose single or double rib for the hem, cuffs and neckband according to your liking. Pattern includes unisex sizing. Brooklyn Tweed Trillium
“One of the magical things about hand knitting is the formation of the fabric at the same time as the creation of the piece. And because of this, the seamless yoked cardigan is something of a magic trick. A long-time favorite among knitters, I wanted to give this traditional silhouette a modern twist with an updated ribbing, but keep some tradition by using nupps. I hope this finds its way into your Fall wardrobe.” – Michele Wang Designer: Michele Wang Collection: Fall…

Brooklyn Tweed Loess
“The inspiration for Loess came from my life on Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France — very wild and natural, with a little smell of sea spray. This stole is light, soft, and worked with bands of crisply defined patterning.” – Christine de Castelbajac Riffles of openwork and crossed stitches punctuate the smooth surface of stockinette in this elegant, modern scarf. The pattern offers two sizes, a small scarf and a generous wrap.

Brooklyn Tweed Rook
“During the design process, my aim was to create a timeless garment containing both traditional and modern features. I chose a diamond motif with moss stitch that I saw in a fisherman’s sweater because not only is it a beautifully textured stitch, but I can also use it either as a single line of diamonds (as in the sleeve) or a line of multiple diamonds (as in the body). Instead of having a traditional vertical line of purl stitches on either side, I used stockinette stitch to encircle the motif to keep the whole design clean and simple. The sweater is knit top down.
