The clean shape of this classic slouchy cap is the perfect canvas for a beautiful ombre fabric. The marled gradient is formed by working with double- stranded yarn that alternates between 3 consecutive values of color. For a bold gradient effect, choose 3 colors that are equally spaced on the value scale (light, medium and dark), or for a more subtle shift choose three similar values that have subtle shifts in color. In our brown sample we started with the lightest value so the hat darkens towards the crown; swapping color 1 and 3 will reverse the direction of the gradient.

Brooklyn Tweed Admix Hat

The textured fabric of the Admix Hat was designed to combine different yarns of the same weight for interesting color and texture effects. Choose two or more DK weight yarns with contrasting colors, dye processes or fiber contents to create unique fabrics. Here, we combine a sturdy workhorse solid-dyed wool ( Arbor ) with a tonally-dyed cotton-merino blend ( Dapple ). The softer color transitions of hand- or tonal- dyed yarns shift and mix gently when interspersed with a solid base in a coordinating or complementary color. Designer: Jared Flood Share on social…

Brooklyn Tweed Foliage Dot Hat

Brooklyn Tweed Foliage Dot Hat

“The Foliage Dot hat employs a unique and interesting stitch pattern that reminds me of autumn leaves. Each “leaf” motif is similar to a bobble, in that several stitches are increased from a single stitch to create each textural leaf. Unlike a bobble, however, the decreasing of these additional stitches is distributed over the following few rounds, rather than being worked all at once. This whimsical stitch pattern provides a great opportunity for creative colorplay. Experiment with incorporating 2, 3, 4 (or more) contrast colors to create unique color stories.

"This classic 2x2 ribbed beanie features a dramatic crown design that elevates it from the ordinary to the special. The hat is shaped using unique, directional quadruple decreases to shape the ribbing in a sinuous, organic way. These ribbed decreases look beautiful on both RS and WS, making the hat completely reversible. The hat can be worn unfolded for a slouchy look or with a folded double brim for a watchcap style.

This hat was conceived as the gentlest possible introduction to stranded colorwork. Only six rounds (eight rounds, if you choose the largest of the three sizes) require the use of two colors, and these rounds alternate colors on every stitch to take the guesswork out of tensioning correctly. The color combinations you can create from the Loft palette are practically endless: choose a light, a medium or bright, and a dark value and you’re off to the races. Further customize your Seeds by selecting your preferred ribbing pattern for a stretchy edging.

For casual weekend errands, throw on this organically cabled hat that recalls patches of sky glimpsed from the forest floor. Sturdy cabled trunks interspersed among the ribs of the brim branch into more delicate interlacing motifs on a ground of reverse stockinette. The ribbed crown finishes with a jaunty pompom, if you so desire. Try it in your favorite bright accent color from the Shelter palette or choose a wear-with-everything neutral like Fossil or Snowbound. Blending seamlessly with these cable crosses are fully-fashioned double decreases at the crown, which result in a uniquely geometric design at the top of the hat.

“My favorite hats are the ones I grab and throw on over and over again – those that pair easily with a wide variety of looks. When I created this design, I was thinking about a hat that would fit these criteria. And what guy doesn’t like having a classic cabled beanie (or two) in his closet? Worked in a fingering weight yarn, this cap stays light and comfortable while still being warm and stylish. The addition of a gathered crown and slightly slouchy silhouette gives a modern touch to this iconic style.

Leander begins with twisted rib, morphing into a traveling current of brioche rib shaped to follow a sinuous course by a combination of decorative increases and decreases. This directional shaping also lends gentle curves along the scarf’s outer edges, fluidly framing the neck and the shoulders when draped. Worked in woolen-spun Shelter, Leander makes for a gratifying combination of tactile indulgence and lofty warmth. This scarf is worked in two pieces, each from the cast-on edge to the center; the pieces are then joined. The long edges are finished with a knit-in I-cord edging.

“To give the basic Aran pullover a little pizzazz, I added the bias cables on the front and back pieces. They add interest not only by changing the flow of the cables, but by changing the entire silhouette of the sweater. The biasing gives the slightest hint of a peplum and accentuates the waist naturally. And to keep the femininity, the neckband is a soft rollover versus a traditional ribbed neckband.” – Michele Wang Designer: Michele Wang Collection: Fall…

“This shawl is worked using a modified version of a traditional Shetland construction. In this case stockinette stitch replaces the typical garter stitch used in the center triangle portion of the shawl. As with the traditional method, yarn overs are worked at the beginning of every row creating visual loops, which are then picked up to work the border. Sandness is intended as a bigger cousin companion to my Norby beanie as they share the same textured pattern.

“I love chevrons! I cannot get enough. I particularly love how they distort a seemingly straightforward row of knitting into spectacular peaks and valleys. Pair a chevron with the humble stripe and boom! My knitter’s heart beats a little faster. Taking into account that chevrons don’t make a rectangular shape on their own, I have helped them out by filling in the corners. This creates a few extra pieces to knit to make a shape that resembles a sweater, but the end result is a garment that is interesting to knit. Interesting to knit while being all knit!
