Case for Making Fluorescent Violet

An ultra-bright synthetic! Like all our fluorescents, this fun glowy violet is opaque and super smooth. Fluorescents absorb invisible UV light energy and reemit it at a higher visible wavelength. This enhances the appearance of the pigment, delivering those eye-catching, radiant colors we love! Fluorescents are also fantastic for mixing a bit of brightness into core colors. Let the party begin! Important Note on Fluorescents!: The amazing neon qualities of fluorescents are difficult to capture in a scan or photograph.

This color contains fluorescent pigment, which is not lightfast. Fading can be reduced by coating finished pieces in a UV protective varnish and/or keeping them out of direct sunlight.

A cool, deep purple-brown natural earth pigment with high opacity, lightfastness, and a very consistent and smooth texture with a matte finish. At its most opaque, it's just slightly metallic, thanks to its high concentration of hematite. The pigments we use to make these colors are specific to Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range. Natural earth pigments have been mined from this region since the mid-1800's, and we think these colors are still unrivaled in intensity and richness.

True Vermilion is a brilliant red pigment with a rich history of use around the world, from Ancient Rome’s decorative arts, to illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, to lacquerware in China since the Song dynasty. Vermillion was even used as a cosmetic rouge in ancient West Asia.

Thursday, July 30, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. Dorothy Hood was born in 1918 and spent her life in both Mexico and Texas. Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.
