We teamed up with the folks at Oxford Pennant to create this limited edition pennant inspired by the pennants flown during the suffrage movement in the early 20th century (with a little twist). Each pennant is 7" x 21" and hand-made in the USA.

On August 18th, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. After nearly a century of lobbying, marching, and protesting, it was finally illegal to deny anyone the right to vote on the basis of sex. This was a massive step forward for equal voting rights in the US, but it was not without its flaws. Some members of the suffrage movement had sought to exclude Black women from the protection of the Amendment.

Blackwing pencils were favored by award-winning creators throughout the 20th century. Despite a cult following, they were discontinued in the 1990s. Devotees began paying as much as $40 on eBay for a single pencil. In the early 2000s, we used our access to the best wood, graphite and artisan makers in the world to introduce a premium pencil line we called Palomino. The buzz surrounding Palomino led Blackwing fans to ask us to try and bring Blackwing pencils back for a new generation. In 2010, we did just that. In June of 1966, George Harrison met maestro Ravi Shankar in Bath, England. Harrison asked Ravi to teach him how to play the sitar, a task Ravi agreed to only after considerable hesitation. Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.
