Blackwing XIX “Vote for Women” Pennant

The Blackwing XIX is our tribute to the 19th Amendment and the continued fight for voting rights in the United States and around the world. On August 18th, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. That day, pro-suffrage protestors and legislators wore yellow roses pinned to their lapels, while their anti-suffrage counterparts wore red roses. This prompted the day to be dubbed “The War of the Roses.” This enamel pin is inspired by the yellow roses worn by the suffragists one hundred years ago.

This was a massive step forward for equal voting rights in the US, but it was not without its flaws. Lab 07.29.21 is the second installment in our Labs series. With this Lab, we’re experimenting with a non-photo blue core that disappears in scans and photocopies. The design for this Lab features a blue and natural two-toned barrel, silver ferrule, silver clip, white eraser, and white imprint. Each set includes 12 pencils. We made 2500 sets of Lab 07.29.21. Blackwing pencils were favored by award-winning creators throughout the 20th century. Despite a cult following, they were discontinued in the 1990s. Devotees began paying as much as $40 on eBay for a single pencil. In the early 2000s, we used our access to the best wood, graphite and artisan makers in the world to introduce a premium pencil line we called Palomino. The buzz surrounding Palomino led Blackwing fans to ask us to try and bring Blackwing pencils back for a new generation. In 2010, we did just that. When the Preservation Hall was founded in the 1960s, its mission was to preserve the living tradition of New Orleans jazz music. They've done so through the nightly ritual of intimate acoustic performances held at the Preservation Hall and at similar venues around the world. Volume 223 celebrates Woody Guthrie and his immutable optimism. Woody is often depicted in sepia tones reminiscent of the Dust Bowl, but his artistic palette extended much further. Keith Haring was one of the most renowned of the young artists of the 1980s. Inspired by the graffiti artists whose marks covered the city’s subway cars, Haring began to draw in white chalk over the black paper used to cover vacant advertising panels.
