With Cloudline we challenged ourselves to design the perfect “first hat” pattern for a new knitter while also creating an appealing project for seasoned knitters as well. This hat is knit using only basic techniques: the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and the knit-2-together decrease and is the perfect project for practicing circular knitting (or for whipping up last-minute gifts!). Cloudline’s bi-colored marl fabric is created by holding two strands of fingering-weight yarn together as you knit.

Brooklyn Tweed Cetus
At the junction of agile stitchwork and intuitive fun lies the richly textured Cetus Hat. Here you’ll find a balanced combination of garter stitch and mock cable columns — rather like gilded onlay — growing out of slip stitch ribbing and cable trusses to converge into a relaxed slouch and rosette crown. And for those of you who enjoy clever tricks in your toolbox: a round of knits bisects the ribbing to form a crease that helps the brim turn up for comfortable double-warmth at the ears.

Brooklyn Tweed Seeds
This hat was conceived as the gentlest possible introduction to stranded colorwork. Only six rounds (eight rounds, if you choose the largest of the three sizes) require the use of two colors, and these rounds alternate colors on every stitch to take the guesswork out of tensioning correctly. The color combinations you can create from the Loft palette are practically endless: choose a light, a medium or bright, and a dark value and you’re off to the races. Further customize your Seeds by selecting your preferred ribbing pattern for a stretchy edging.

Brooklyn Tweed Sandness
“This shawl is worked using a modified version of a traditional Shetland construction. In this case stockinette stitch replaces the typical garter stitch used in the center triangle portion of the shawl. As with the traditional method, yarn overs are worked at the beginning of every row creating visual loops, which are then picked up to work the border. Sandness is intended as a bigger cousin companion to my Norby beanie as they share the same textured pattern.

Brooklyn Tweed Corvid
Make a sweeping statement in this dramatic long coat with an innovative notched collar in cartridge rib. The fronts are cut away from hip to hem to swing freely open, and the drop shoulders create just a touch of detail at the narrow sleeves. The body is worked flat in three pieces and seamed; stitches for the sleeves are picked up around the armholes and knit in the round to the cuffs. The collar and lower front extensions are picked up and knit after assembly. In woolen-spun Shelter, Corvid moves beautifully without weighing you down. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Winter…

Brooklyn Tweed Roko
"The thick strands of both Arbor Lodge and Quarry are ideal for oversized cables and this quality was the starting inspiration point for this vest. Invested with a heavy dose of classic fisherman sweater vibes, these cables are plumped up to an almost cartoonish degree, and lend a light-hearted air to an easy-going layering piece." — designer, Lis Smith Quarry Barn Owl sample photographed with Grooves Cap by Jared Flood. Brooklyn Tweed Equus
This workhorse sweater, embellished with a field of fine cables on the central panels, will see you through any busy day in comfort. The relaxed A-line fit is easy to wear, and slim set-in sleeves and carefully tailored shoulders ensure a polished look. The three narrow panels of the front and back are knit separately, then sewn with an exposed seam for a touch of rugged texture. A classic close-fitting turtleneck in double rib makes Equus extra cozy. Porter black gives this sweater a sophisticated note; a bright autumn hue from the Arbor palette might lift your mood on a cloudy day.

Brooklyn Tweed Maki
The subtle simplicity of Maki calls for a closer look, which reveals that there is more to this design than meets the eye. The flattering A-line silhouette is accented by rows of welts on the back yoke for satisfying texture that also peeks out and around to the front of the shoulders, like angular epaulettes. The rolled neckline, garter stitch trims, and notched vents at the hems serve as balancing counterpoints that echo the framing of the back yoke. Wear Maki as a year-round layering piece with beguiling elegance.

Brooklyn Tweed Tree Rings
“This pi shawl gracefully blends Elizabeth Zimmermann’s traditional construction with fresh textures. While many pi shawls employ only lace patterns, this one focuses on rich texture and motion, drawing the eye from the center outward and then around the circumference of the circle as the chevrons point the way. The stitch patterns used are very simple and can easily be memorized, but the resulting fabric is mesmerizing.” – Andrea Rangel Designer: Andrea Rangel Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Spearheads
A bold Icelandic-style yoke printed with a spirograph of interlacing chevrons is striking on anybody. Spearheads knits up lightning fast in two high-contrast colors of Quarry to fend off the winter chill. We paired Gypsum with Lazulite and Hematite; imagine the yoke in Citrine on a background of Obsidian or marry Slate with Sandstone for a mellow contrast. Reversing the dark and light colors should be equally successful. Choose single or double rib for the hem, cuffs and neckband according to your liking. Pattern includes unisex sizing. Brooklyn Tweed Riverbend
A boxy, open-gauge cardigan in Quarry: the ultimate in slouchy comfort that doesn’t sacrifice good looks. Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.

Brooklyn Tweed Bracondale
Bundle into a plush, oversized turtleneck pullover for late-season trips to the mountains. Laura Chau puts a surprising slant on uncomplicated cables and ribs by working Bracondale’s front and back on the bias. The sweater begins with the ribbed side panels, back, and front worked individually and seamed together. The ribbed sleeves are worked in the round from stitches picked up at the armholes; the turtleneck is picked up and worked in the round, then completed with a tubular bind-off for elasticity and a professional finish.

Brooklyn Tweed Rock Island
A ribbon of zigzag lace with a yarnover selvedge forms the foundation for this pretty triangular shawl. Stitches picked up from the yarnovers take a few steadying ridges of garter stitch while decreases are established at the edges and spine, then begin to intermingle in a traditional two-sided lace pattern before relaxing into an ever-diminishing field of garter. This perfect balance of focused effort and straightforward plain knitting has made Rock Island an enduring favorite in the Brooklyn Tweed archives. Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Classics ; Vale…

Brooklyn Tweed Stroopwafel Cardigan
"This quick-knitting cardigan makes the most of round, multi-ply yarns with smooth definition. The chunky gauge of the fabric turns up the volume on the many knitterly details stashed throughout the project. A simple allover garter rib pattern forms the basis for strong architectural shaping details, all of which are worked with decorative double-decreases that keep the rib pattern unbroken throughout and highlight unique design lines. The compound raglan yoke creates a comfortable fit through the shoulders and the easy-to-work stand-up collar creates a cozy finish.
