Blackwing Eras is our homage to the past and celebration of the future of Blackwing. Each set includes 12 special edition pencils inspired by some of the earliest Blackwings ever produced. Each pencil features a dark grey barrel, iconic dark grey ferrule with a gold stripe, dark gold imprint, red eraser, and our extra-firm graphite. We made a limited number of these sets to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Blackwing’s revival. Note: The Blackwing Eras is a special edition pencil not included in the Volumes program.

Blackwing pencils were favored by award-winning creators throughout the 20th century. Despite a cult following, they were discontinued in the 1990s. Devotees began paying as much as $40 on eBay for a single pencil. In the early 2000s, we used our access to the best wood, graphite and artisan makers in the world to introduce a premium pencil line we called Palomino. The buzz surrounding Palomino led Blackwing fans to ask us to try and bring Blackwing pencils back for a new generation. In 2010, we did just that. Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.
