Blackwing Labs are small batch pencil releases that offer a fun look at our design process. The results may see us experimenting with new features, or putting new spins on old favorites. Each pencil will be foil stamped with the date of the release, and each box will be numbered by batch. Our first Blackwing Labs release is Lab 11.27.20. With this Lab, we’re experimenting with holographic variants. The standard design features a grey barrel, black ferrule, black clip, black eraser, black imprint, and balanced graphite.

Lab 11.26.21 is the third installment in our Labs series. With this Lab, we’re experimenting with an extra-soft graphite core that is softer, darker, and smoother than anything we’ve done before. LAB 11.24.23 is the ninth installment in our Labs series. With this Lab, we’re experimenting with misfit pencils from our past releases that didn’t quite make the cut. We’ve been gathering pencils for over three years for this Lab. These misfits contain off-spec standard Blackwings, Volumes deviations, experiments, and more. Imperfections include primed pencils with a single layer of lacquer, minor physical defects, irregular color blends and top coat variations, among others. Each unique small-batch pack includes 12 pencils that are aesthetically flawed but perfectly functional.

Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.

In June of 1966, George Harrison met maestro Ravi Shankar in Bath, England. Harrison asked Ravi to teach him how to play the sitar, a task Ravi agreed to only after considerable hesitation. Their collaboration resulted in an explosion in the popularity of classical Indian music and culture in the United States and around the world. The Blackwing 3 is a tribute to Ravi Shankar on his 100th birthday. It features our extra-firm graphite and a matte turmeric finish accented with a pattern inspired by one of Ravi’s iconic sitars.
