This classic 7.5” x 11.75” book features a vegan leather and suede cover with different textures and 152 high quality ledger pages that are individually numbered. The Indigenous peoples of the Plains have kept visual histories for centuries. As they continued to be displaced by settlers throughout the 19th century, this practice became rigorous, and even more essential.

Blackwing pencils were favored by award-winning creators throughout the 20th century. Despite a cult following, they were discontinued in the 1990s. Devotees began paying as much as $40 on eBay for a single pencil. In the early 2000s, we used our access to the best wood, graphite and artisan makers in the world to introduce a premium pencil line we called Palomino. Volume 223 celebrates Woody Guthrie and his immutable optimism. Woody is often depicted in sepia tones reminiscent of the Dust Bowl, but his artistic palette extended much further. Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.
