Developed in collaboration with Martha Stewart, Coverlet is inspired by the bold geometry of patterns created by overshot weaving, a technique closely associated with the bed coverings, or coverlets, found in American homes as early as the seventeenth century. Please note that rugs over 6' wide are constructed by seaming two pieces of fabric together. We make every effort to minimize the appearance of seams; however, patterns may not align perfectly. Our design team began by drawing each rose by hand to ensure the individual nuances would be visible within the weave. As the flowers came to life on the loom, the team experimented with scale, refined the shapes, and fine-tuned the shading to arrive at the extraordinary final design. This dynamic design is inspired by samplers that were used to learn and demonstrate darning: a sewing technique for repairing holes or worn areas in fabric by replicating the structure of the original material. Dating back to at least the 18th century, these samplers typically covered small pieces of cloth in darning "blocks" of various weave structures in a variety of colors—especially blue, green, red, and yellow yarns—to make intricacies visible and show the weaver's skill.
