At 13 minutes, Georges Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon was groundbreaking due to its length, intricate sets, elaborate costumes, and coherent story. It is not only the earliest example of a science fiction film, it also laid the foundation for narrative films of all genres. The Blackwing 1138 salutes A Trip to the Moon and all things sci-fi. Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.

When the Preservation Hall was founded in the 1960s, its mission was to preserve the living tradition of New Orleans jazz music. They've done so through the nightly ritual of intimate acoustic performances held at the Preservation Hall and at similar venues around the world.
