Corita Kent was an educator, artist, and social justice advocate who believed that art could be a tool for dialogue, reflection, and change. While chair of the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, Corita asked her students to engage in “slow looking” exercises. Using a paper viewfinder tool that simulated the experience of using a camera, her students were able to select, isolate, and examine the details of the world around them. This resulted in piles of drawings that taught the students how to slow down and see the world with a fresh perspective.

Blackwing Volume 54 (Set of 12)
Surrealist artists used an exercise known as Exquisite Corpse to create collaborative poems and works of art composed of pieced-together words and images. We used that same exercise to design a pencil. First, we separated the pencil into five components (graphite, lacquer, imprint, ferrule, eraser). Then, we blindly selected the design for each component and assembled the results. The finished pencil features a rose barrel, teal imprint, silver ferrule, blue eraser and our extra-firm graphite.

For centuries, the Indigenous people of North America have preserved their histories through art. As more and more Native Americans were displaced by westward-expanding colonialism, art became a vessel for preserving their culture as well as their history. Their daily lives were recorded through paintings, songs, stories, and dances. The Blackwing 574 pencil is our tribute to Native American art and the 574 nations that use it to assert agency and identity.

Blackwing Volume 57 (Set of 12)
Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the best known artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works are edgy and raw, and through a bold sense of color and composition, he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery and primitivism. The conjunction of various media is an integral element of Basquiat’s art.

Blackwing Volume 10 (Set of 12)
In 1887, Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World tasked Nellie Bly, a yet unknown journalist, with investigating the insane asylum on New York’s Blackwell’s Island. The resulting series, which she titled “Ten Days in a Madhouse,” is one of the earliest and most iconic examples of unbiased investigative journalism. It uncovered the brutal conditions in which patients were forced to live, and shined a spotlight on the misconceptions surrounding mental illness. The Blackwing 10 is a tribute to Nellie Bly - and investigative journalists like her - who keep citizens informed, and give them a voice.

Blackwing Palomino Blue Slate Notebook
Blackwing pencils were favored by award-winning creators throughout the 20th century. Despite a cult following, they were discontinued in the 1990s. Devotees began paying as much as $40 on eBay for a single pencil. In the early 2000s, we used our access to the best wood, graphite and artisan makers in the world to introduce a premium pencil line we called Palomino. The buzz surrounding Palomino led Blackwing fans to ask us to try and bring Blackwing pencils back for a new generation. In 2010, we did just that.

Blackwing X Preservation Hall (Set of 12)
When the Preservation Hall was founded in the 1960s, its mission was to preserve the living tradition of New Orleans jazz music. They've done so through the nightly ritual of intimate acoustic performances held at the Preservation Hall and at similar venues around the world. In 2011, they took their mission a step further by establishing the Preservation Hall Foundation to bring the New Orleans musical tradition into classrooms and community centers in New Orleans and beyond. The Foundation teaches students skills that are valuable outside of a venue.
