Handmade from thick, premium washi in a warm cream tone, each shade embodies the depth and elegance of Japanese artistry. We pair these authentic shades with solid brass and wood components to create a refined, enduring design. Namesake: In Japanese, Umi means the sea or ocean.

Each Sumi shade is made from sheets of washi that have been hand-painted with traditional sumi black ink and white pigment in an abstract pattern.

Representing the pinnacle of Kyoto craftsmanship, each fan is entirely handmade—from shaping the aged Tanba bamboo ribs to precisely cutting and applying the washi paper. The sun-bleached washi paper is produced by master artisans, while the sculpted smooth handle is crafted from locally sourced Tsuga hemlock.
