Brooklyn Tweed's CAPSULE series showcases a focused collection from a single designer. In the first volume of CAPSULE, we present a collection in which Olga Buraya-Kefelian's interest in texture and geometry is translated into eight original knitwear patterns; from dense cables to airy open lace, she explores the full range of possible fabrics that our woolen-spun yarns can create. Olga's design sense is instantly recognizable: inventive, questing, and unwilling to be bound by two dimensions.

Brooklyn Tweed Nobu
A dramatic peplum creates a memorable silhouette and a very engaging knit. Nobu is a study in texture as well as form. A dense lattice of small cables on the back and sleeves creates flattering diagonal lines and lends the necessary structure to support the peplum’s flare, while the front is embellished with OXO motifs flanking a panel that looks like rings of chainmail. The tailored shapes are worked flat from the bottom up and sewn together. Designer: Olga Buraya-Kefelian Collection: CAPSULE | Olga…

Brooklyn Tweed Koto
Koto’s futuristic drop-shoulder silhouette and high-relief texture contrast with the traditional woolen-spun loft of Shelter and Tones to create a thoroughly modern pullover. Brooklyn Tweed Ondawa
Architectural and completely modern in shape, this cropped pullover is a compelling knit and an eye-catching addition to any wardrobe. The front, back, and sleeves are simple quadrangles worked flat and seamed to achieve a wide, swingy shape with an open neckline and snugly fitted three-quarter-length sleeves. The interplay of twisted ribs, cables, and traveling stitches yields a fabric that wants to move and fold, and clever placement of each element creates flattering lines on the body.

Brooklyn Tweed Guilder
“The classic cabled scarf is an iconic piece of knitwear with endless variation. It’s a leitmotif that I love playing with and am continuously inspired by. Guilder features a beautiful double-coin cable running up the center, flanked by heavy fishbone cables that mirror each other. Each end features a 2×2 ribbing that flows directly into the motifs without interruption, while the selvedges of the scarf combine a built-in 2-stitch I-cord with a column of 1×1 ribbing to create a clean and flat edge.

Woodfords is a delicious puzzle in seamless construction, sure to appeal to knitters who love inventive shapes and new approaches. Brooklyn Tweed Idlewild
“I love this cable motif. I’ll confess I took nearly as much time perfecting just the right stitch combination as it took to knit the sample. The asymmetry of the twisted-stitch cable pattern is the feature of this pullover, but the side hem slits and dolman sleeve shaping pull it all together in a modern, minimal way.” – Julie Hoover Designer: Julie Hoover Collection: Fall…

Brooklyn Tweed Bray
“When swatching design ideas for this collection I found myself drawn to lace and cable combinations again and again. I love the juxtaposition of heavier horseshoe cables with columns of eyelets; the fabric has textural appeal but remains light and open. I chose to work the sleeves simply in reverse stockinette to balance the more intricate body fabric. The yoke hybridizes elements from both the raglan and the saddle-shoulder, adding a modern twist to the classic knitted jumper.” – Jared Flood Designer: Jared Flood Collection: Fall…

Brooklyn Tweed Svalbard
“This cardigan was inspired by a desire to play with volume and drape in combination with a strong, architectural stitch pattern and clean, flattering details. The deep, bell-like swoop of the bottom hem is balanced by the tailored shoulders and three-quarter length sleeves, and both are complimented by the soft falls of the fronts and shawl collar. Add to this an interesting take on traditional raglan shaping, and you have a cardigan that’s both intriguing to knit and effortless to wear!” – Bristol Ivy Designer: Bristol Ivy Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Riverbend
A boxy, open-gauge cardigan in Quarry: the ultimate in slouchy comfort that doesn’t sacrifice good looks. Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.

“I liked designing this poncho with a little more structure; the turtleneck, seamed sides and armhole openings will make certain this poncho doesn’t twist around or become too fussy to wear. Brooklyn Tweed Collomia
The on-trend silhouette of the Collomia pullover offers a dramatic canvas for a timeless stranded colorwork yoke. The woolen-spun texture of Shelter yarn softens the bold stripes and ornate snowflake motifs. With seams only at the underarms and knit at a worsted gauge, Collomia is just as alluring to knit as it is to wear. Knit from the bottom up, the front and back of Collomia are cast on separately for the split hem, then joined knit circularly in one piece. The colorful yoke is worked in the round.

Brooklyn Tweed Rook
“During the design process, my aim was to create a timeless garment containing both traditional and modern features. I chose a diamond motif with moss stitch that I saw in a fisherman’s sweater because not only is it a beautifully textured stitch, but I can also use it either as a single line of diamonds (as in the sleeve) or a line of multiple diamonds (as in the body). Instead of having a traditional vertical line of purl stitches on either side, I used stockinette stitch to encircle the motif to keep the whole design clean and simple. The sweater is knit top down.

Brooklyn Tweed Leadlight
Inspired by patterns of sunlight through antique leaded windows, a branching geometric tracery radiates from a pinhole cast-on. The central square of this lace stole is worked circularly, with two sides extended working flat to form a large rectangle. A garter stitch edge finishes the perimeter. Brooklyn Tweed Tilda
The Tilda Cardigan takes a great basic shape and embellishes it with whimsical details. The column of eyelets along each side seam begins at the hem and flows directly into the raglan lines on both fronts and back. The stockinette button band is flanked on either side by a pair of simple cables, while the garment’s body and three-quarter sleeves are trimmed with an optional contrasting color rolled edge. The generous scoop neck begs to be styled with shirts featuring interesting collars (or cowls).

Brooklyn Tweed Willamette
For gorgeous gift knitting, try Willamette, a deeply textured scarf with a reversible motif of cabled diamonds over garter stitch. There’s a chart for the A side and another for the B side; alternate knitting a row from each and you’ll end up with a beautifully patterned fabric that’s different but equally arresting on both sides. Willamette is active knitting with cables on every row, but the geometric motifs are predictable and easy to track. The pattern can be worked in Shelter for oversized coziness or in Loft for a scarf of more traditional scale.

"The thick strands of both Arbor Lodge and Quarry are ideal for oversized cables and this quality was the starting inspiration point for this vest. Invested with a heavy dose of classic fisherman sweater vibes, these cables are plumped up to an almost cartoonish degree, and lend a light-hearted air to an easy-going layering piece." — designer, Lis Smith Quarry Barn Owl sample photographed with Grooves Cap by Jared Flood.
