Case for Making CfM Monarch

Our response to September 9th, 2020, when smoke and ash from a devastating fire season hovered above the Bay Area marine layer, blocking out the daylight. Custom blended from four of our core pigments, Climate Change is Real represents the color of the sky the day the sun didn't rise. All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness!

Indigo was one of our first handmade watercolors, a must-have in a palette! This rich synthetic color simulates Genuine Indigo and provides a wide range of tones—at its darkest it appears almost black! Both colors are fantastic for layering, glazing, and color mixing (a little bit goes a long way!) and are wonderfully opaque at full saturation. Genuine Indigo is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant through a fermentation process, and further refined to achieve greater saturation and intensity.

Thursday, June 25, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PT This is an online workshop held via Zoom. What if understanding how watercolor is made completely changed how you use it? In this watercolor primer, CfM founder Alexis Joseph starts at the very beginning -- demonstrating how a batch of watercolor paint is made from pure pigment. Once you understand the material, everything else starts to click into place. From there, we'll build together: color wheel, basic brush handling, color mixing, and a series of color charts where you'll practice creating gradations of tints and shades to keep as reference.

Mop brushes are naturally fluffy and soft—wonderful for creating light washes or calligraphy script. The bristles puff out a bit, which lends toward beautifully varied brush strokes. They're also handy for lifting a good amount of water when making premixtures! Their curious, playful natures are fascinating, and their graceful movements are full of joy. Observing them swimming in the San Francisco Bay inspired me to loosen my approach to painting and respond more intuitively to the natural world. In this workshop we’ll explore foundational watercolor techniques such as wet-into-wet, layering, and more, with an emphasis on using minimal, fluid brushstrokes to paint these streamlined creatures.

Her large abstract paintings are full of hard and soft edges, moments where the paint pools and gathers and places where the paint makes crisp lines and angles. Her colors are bold and inspired by the full range of colors found in both Mexico and Texas. With watercolors, we will play with some of Dorothy’s shapes by creating hard edges with tape, letting the watercolors be soft and blend, and create dynamic shapes with layered colors.
