Earn an advanced degree in lace with this stunning stole from Leila Raven, a long-time contributor to Wool People and Brooklyn Tweed collections who’s given us favorites like Stasis (Spring Thaw) and Bough (Wool People 6). Mirepoix’s geometric zigzags of three distinct motifs involve double-sided patterning, but the work becomes rhythmic and intuitive after the first repeats. The chevron mesh border is worked together with the main fabric of the stole and wraps the corners to become a knitted-on edging at the short ends. Two short grafts make for an all-but-invisible finish.

Brooklyn Tweed Ravine

Rivulets of patterning run along this stole, with eyelets shifting, branching, and straightening in predictable sequences. The organic effect calls to mind creek beds, root systems, droplets coursing down a window. A meditative knit in laceweight Vale, Ravine is understated enough to elevate everyday outfits and needn’t be reserved for special occasions only. Worked flat from end to end, this pattern uses only the simplest techniques and is accessible to knitters who are new to lace. Designer: Sandhya Shandangi Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Brooklyn Tweed Snowflake Stole

Véronik created a luxuriously soft and snuggly stole by working with Loft on a large needle and lace-blocking the finished fabric. Simple garter stitch is transformed into a pillowy, cloudlike stole that is equally at home wrapped around the shoulders or bundled under a winter coat as a long scarf. The charted half of the stole features a graphic lace snowflake motif, while the second half is filled with a random eyelet “snow” pattern. Have fun embracing your inner knitting spontaneity – no two stoles will be exactly the same! Designer: Véronik Avery Collection: Winter…

Brooklyn Tweed Tilt

“Tilting diagonal bands radiate from the center of this square first in one direction, then the other, through the border. Paired eyelets separate bands of stockinette stitch and moss stitch, with leaves sprouting from the border to create an edge in soft contrast to the clean geometric lines. Sweet, simple, and quick to work up, this shawl would make an equally wonderful baby blanket.”− Leila Raven Designer: Leila Raven Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Knit a lace stole or a large cowl from the same pattern of diamonds and rhombuses in shifting textures – knit, purl, garter. Both versions of Prism are knit from end to end, and the motif is intuitive to work once established, with lace maneuvers on right-side rows only. Bands of garter stitch divide the cowl into panels, one of which conceals the graft where the ends meet. Vale’s palette offers both bright and nuanced hues to create a spectrum of Prisms that will suit any wardrobe. Designer: Natalie Servant Collection: Wool People, Volume…

This gracefully modern interpretation of the traditional lace stole plays with clever, knitterly construction. Dawn Catanzaro gives her piece an unexpected 90-degree twist to make an impact with long lines of garter stitch. The center of the stole is knit up from a long foundational strip of lace, the lace of the short edges is accomplished together with the body, and the second long lace edge is worked as the garter stitches are bound off. Knit in Loft at an airy gauge, the fabric is light and warm as down. Designer: Dawn Catanzaro Collection: Wool People, Volume…

Bristol Ivy is known for garments and accessories with innovative, geometric forms, such as Thorn (Wool People 4), Svalbard (Wool People 6), and Keel (Wool People 8). Now she gives us an inversion of the positive and negative space relationships often found in asymmetric shawls. A simple silhouette — trim sleeves and gentle A-line waist shaping — serves as the ideal canvas for Fabiola’s beautifully tessellating, allover colorwork. An irresistible piece sure to hone your skills, Fabiola incorporates steeking at the armholes and neckline, a technique that ingeniously allows the mosaic motif to continue uninterrupted in the round, before the remainder of the garment is completed seamlessly. For your background colors, choose closely related shades of Loft for subtle glowing striations at the body, or bolder pairings for eye-catching, contrastive stripes.

Brooklyn Tweed Leander

Brooklyn Tweed Leander

Leander begins with twisted rib, morphing into a traveling current of brioche rib shaped to follow a sinuous course by a combination of decorative increases and decreases. This directional shaping also lends gentle curves along the scarf’s outer edges, fluidly framing the neck and the shoulders when draped. Worked in woolen-spun Shelter, Leander makes for a gratifying combination of tactile indulgence and lofty warmth. This scarf is worked in two pieces, each from the cast-on edge to the center; the pieces are then joined. The long edges are finished with a knit-in I-cord edging.

Riverbend’s hem is shaped with short rows so that the back is several inches longer than the cropped fronts. The deep V of the neckline makes it easy to layer. All pieces are knit flat, and we chose to assemble them with the purl side facing out, but instructions are also given for exposing the traditional knit side if you prefer. Two options are given for resolving the short rows so that they’ll be least visible on the public side of your garment, whichever side you’d like that to be.
